I can't find a main because I don't play good with any specific character.

So I just cannot seem to be able to sit down with one character. I'm always changing because I don't get better results with any one individual character. Honestly, I suck at the game. Like, I understand it more than someone that just plays causually, but overall I suck. And part of that may be because I can't seem to take the time to practice one character. I just can't tell... Is there ANY suggestions/tips?

MegaJoseph32123 MegaJoseph32123 If you want to be better at the game, and find your main, start by finding your playstyle. How do you enjoy fighting in Smash ? Personally, I'm pretty defensive, but not too much, turtling sucks. You can also watch some videos on YouTube about [insert character name]'s basic stuff, and after trained that, play some games with him. If this STILL didn't help, you can go here https://smashboards.com/threads/smash-ultimate-mains-advice-thread.465846/ and ask who to main

Don't worry about results until much later. First you should pick a character you like who fits your playstyle. Do you like to rushdown your opponents and be up close in front of them? Or do you want to be far away from your opponent and keep them at bay with projectiles? Just imagine in your head how you wanna fight and then pick the character that closely relates to you and your playstyle.

Far from Smash: What do you like to do in video games? What feels satisfying to you? That's the best place to start when it comes to figuring out a character to play.

For example: I don't like shooters. Guns aren't fun to me. If I have to play Left 4 Dead then I'm the guy running in with a bat or chainsaw or whatever because being up close and personal and feeling that impact is much more satisfying to me. I also tend to gravitate to tanky characters in video games. Both of these aspects of my personality are very relevant to my Smash character tastes.

Having gone through exactly what you have for a long time, I can say that you dont need a main at first unless youre able to commit yourself to one (or a few) that youre motivated enough get better with. You can have multiple characters in your pocket too.

Once you get to a certain point it'll be easier to specialize in one or a few characters that you can see yourself spending a lot more time with. It's a good idea to explore and play with all those you might like until you understand what you like better.

And even if you find one character you want to main, you're still going to lose against people who are better than you. You have to enjoy getting better and learn from your games, and eventually you'll lose less and feel more confident with the characters you dedicate more time to.
Good luck :)

Finding a main can be very hard as I experienced this in Smash 4 when Ice Climbers were cut. With everyone back it's definably harder than ever to settle down. I'm sure you will find someone and here are some of my tips that might be able to help :D

  • Don't be afraid to lose while testing around and after you find a main. Losing sucks and hurts I know ( a little secret, I use to cry and complain when I lose in any fighting game but take it as it is ) but like others said above, it's going happen and ultimately makes us better. Just focus on the match and have fun, see if you can identify any habits in yourself or opponents along the way
  • Try to find the playstyle that best suit your enjoyment. Try be as comfortable as you can when playing a character. You have Rush downs , Defensive, Balance, and even unorthodox characters. Though each character can play the game you want with proper knowledge and practice, some characters just excel in those areas. See which feels natural to you.
  • Even if you can't pinpoint your choice of play now, just dive right into the roster. Start with Mario ( order doesn't matter really ) and then just go down the line to see which character you find the most enjoy in playing. Once you find that character, stick with him / her no matter the loses and struggles. It's part of getting better and improving. Other than the fact that Ice Climbers are all time favorite since Melee, losing was the biggest factor for my crisis and feeling like I was getting better.
  • Try watching informative guides and watch high level play of the character you choose to sorta formulate an ideal playstyle you want to embody and apply it to what you know and learn. I think this site and Smash Amino offer a lot of nice people willing to help you. Practice, Practice, Practice, and take losing as a blessing rather than your lack of ability. you don't suck :)
I really hope this helps find that right character you want. Just take it slow and get feel for the character you want then narrow them down

This might be a little unorthodox but it helped my sister. Literally goof off in the game. Play with items on, play with stage hazards, play stamina mode and squad strike and special smash. My sister got into DK after playing super sudden death. Have fun with the game and worry less about the character. If you’re having fun with a certain character while playing these (stupid casual) modes than that fun will translate over to playing and learning them on a more competitive scale. Again it sounds unorthodox but it’s helped many people find at least one character they are having fun with.
Also I highly recommend just going to training mode to goof off too!

I'm glad you've been helped and everything they said is 100% true!
Something else that is important is to not go into the game thinking that the character you thought you would play as is the character you should play as. For instance when I started getting into Project M I imagined that Wolf was going to be the character I played as, so I stuck with Wolf for a long time and began to feel intense burn out and almost quit Project M, so I started to go through characters one by one to see what I liked and I ended up play as Mewtwo and I don't feel burn out at all because I'm playing as the character I enjoy.
I hope that helped.

As someone who is also new to the game I think all of this is good advice. I'm also terrible at the game and have been trying to figure out who I want to main by hitting the training room with each character I unlock. But like others said finding your fighting style is important.

For instance I very much want to main with Lucina but since I am not very good at the game I find I don't play her very well because I don't have control over what my character is doing. So at this time I don't think she fits my playstyle. I find that Simon fits more in line with my style as a player. When I am able to control how my character moves a little better I think I will try again with Lucina.

Hopefully we both improve!

MegaJoseph32123 MegaJoseph32123 I've been through that in Smash 4. There were a LOT of really good fighters, such as Dark Pit, Falco, and heck, even King Dedede! But eventually, I had a little practice with all the fighters, and eventually decided to stick with Kirby. I'd recommend doing some of the offline modes in Ultimate (Smash, Spirits, and Games & More to be precise, the Vault doesn't count.) before going online. You might find a character that you might want to get sick kills with, such as King K. Rool (:ultkrool:), which you can combo B-Air with itself THREE FREAKING TIMES, or you might find a character that might work against rushdown types, such as Kirby (:ultkirby:). Eventually you'll find a fighter that suits your playstyle, then go online and wreck some newcomers to the game online. Practice makes perfect with each fighter, so try them all out, and find the one you like!
