Tap X or Y briskly. While in the air, tilt down on the control stick.

Oh, you were asking how to do it successfully? Well, it takes a lot of time. Here's a link.

Tapping down is not necessary to short hop, you just need to quickly tap the jump button, like you said at first. Pressing down while in the air lets you fast-fall, which is extremely useful in its own right and in conjunction with short hops, but is a distinct technique.

As for how to consistently short hop: practice, practice, practice. There's not really a trick to it, but if your fingers can't click fast enough, you might just need to build some muscle strength/memory by hopping around a bit. And make sure you always use the jump buttons and not the analog stick tap jump. I can attest that it's really hard to consistently short hop with the analog stick.

Oh, I was barely pressing it, but for a long time before, I have to press it really fast. Okay, got it. (forgive me being a scrub) Well, I have tap jump off and I usually jump with Y, so I set my X button to grab. Is that okay, or not?

There isn't an objectively correct way to set your buttons. If that works for you, go for it!

Well, I'm glad that's that. Can someone shut this forum down? We're done here.
No bad intentions, BTW.

The answer to almost all of the tech questions on this forum have 1 answer:

Practice, and don't go with that try until you get it garbage, practice until you get it everytime

I have my controls similar but I have the left bumper set to jump also, I use the Y button to short hop and the left bumper usually to do high jumps, thats how I differentiate the muscle memory

I seem to short hop more than I wish (sometimes there's situations where I need to jump higher but I'll just hop instead). If you're like me with the Wiimote and Nunchuk, just tap A ever so lightly (or C for that matter) and you should short hop. No need to press the button into the controller.

If you're not tapping the jump button fast enough, try flicking it with the tip or your thumb or nail. If you jump with the control stick, flick that as well.

Just practice doing it not in matches first. When you can short hop without a problem anymore, start putting attacks to it. Than start applying them in your battles. If you are still having trouble, watch this:
