Thanks, I'll try.I updated my post.
Tapping down is not necessary to short hop, you just need to quickly tap the jump button, like you said at first. Pressing down while in the air lets you fast-fall, which is extremely useful in its own right and in conjunction with short hops, but is a distinct technique.Tap X or Y briskly. While in the air, tilt down on the control stick.

Oh, I was barely pressing it, but for a long time before, I have to press it really fast. Okay, got it. (forgive me being a scrub) Well, I have tap jump off and I usually jump with Y, so I set my X button to grab. As for how to consistently short hop: practice, practice, practice. There's not really a trick to it, but if your fingers can't click fast enough, you might just need to build some muscle strength/memory by hopping around a bit. And make sure you always use the jump buttons and not the analog stick tap jump. I can attest that it's really hard to consistently short hop with the analog stick.
There isn't an objectively correct way to set your buttons. If that works for you, go for it!Oh, I was barely pressing it, but for a long time before, I have to press it really fast. Okay, got it. I have my controls similar but I have the left bumper set to jump also, I use the Y button to short hop and the left bumper usually to do high jumps, thats how I differentiate the muscle memoryOh, I was barely pressing it, but for a long time before, I have to press it really fast.
