Remember the biggest complaint most people had about Brawl's with anyone online being lack of options? The fact that you could only have two minute matches and nothing else like stock, coin, or anything really bugged a lot of people. But at least you had some control over things. You could select a stage and which items would appear and then there would be a 25% chance of your selection being picked. If you by chance were playing with other guys who had matching preferences then you'd almost always get something you liked.
Now even that is gone. This whole For Fun and For Glory concept was a terrible solution that wasn't really a solution at all since you can't just lump every last smash player into one of two extremely narrow categories of preference ("I like all items and all stages except Final Destination" and "I like no items and only FD"). If you play For Fun and you and the three folks you end up with all despise a certain level then too bad; you're going to randomly get it despite the fact that none of you would have ever have selected it. And making a million variants of FD is rather wasteful. It would be better to have an option to turn off stage hazards, or at least allow other neutral stages like battlefield.
Also the lack of option to use customization is rather disappointing. What's the point of having customizable characters if you can't use them online? It makes customization feel like a big waste of development time. I think I remember reading that is supposedly to help keep thing "balanced", but that is no excuse to not include it in For Fun at the very least. Here in the age of updates and DLC they can always solve "balance" issues after they're discovered. The best option for the system they chose would be to add an extra mode called "custom" where you can pick it in For Fun and then have a bobombs-in-your-face blast with the special moves, or pick it in For Glory, then get a preview of your opponents moves and gear before the match to avoid any "surprises" and see who does better with their custom character.
Why in the world are you not able to just set things up the way you like and then let people who like the way you set things up join like in With Friends but letting anybody join? That would have been the best way to do things. Which leads me to my biggest peeve of all: Why the flying **** are we not able to make friend requests to people we face online?! If I play a guy in For Glory and think he's a good player to have more matches with some time, I should be able to send a friend request which he can accept or decline. If he accidentally accepts or decides he don't like me, it is easy to remove a person. They could even add an option to automatically decline all friend requests for people that want to friend nobody or just not be bothered.
It feels like Nintendo is over a decade behind when it comes to handling online play. Options make the world go round, and I find Smash's lack of option quite disturbing. Do you think there is any chance of them actually adding more options and/or improving some of these issues with future updates? I really don't want to have to wait another six years for the next Smash while praying they do things right by then....
