I've played smash bros casually for like close to ten years, but like a month ago I discovered the competitive side of Melee and since then I have been training to become the best in the world lol. So I also want to get advice from you smashers on who should I main cause I use 3 characters, Luigi, Samus, and Marth. I also want to know how to get better, I play my neighbor who also learned about the competitive side of Melee the same time I did but playing him doesn't really help so I play cpu's most of the time and I don't feel like that helps at all either. So it would be cool for you guys to give me advice. Thanks for your time!

Hey Shad3. Welcome to the forums... Being the best will take a lot of time and practice but if you really put effort on it it's possible. All the info on melee you need can be found here http://smashboards.com/categories/super-smash-bros-melee.4/ no doubt.
About your main, it1s up to you. If you're into tier lists, i'd say Marth, but if you're into what you feel best playing you can do whatever suits you. People have proven that tier list and tech skills are just one aspect of the game. Outplaying your opponent is the real thing and that has nothing to do with tier lists.
If you can setup a dolphin and play against people online it really helps to improve faster...
CPUS are mostly used to train combo'ing and spacing (their techs are terrible unless you use some 20XX hacks). Training with CPUS is really bad if you're just getting into it because cpu just makes you input as many attacks as you can faster before they can setup for infinite powershields/punish again. So yeah, it doesn't help much. About your friend you should help each other. Don't throw him aside because you think he's not a threat. Make him a threat. Do some x99 stocks training sessions with him on FD. Not for the kills but trying to outplay each others. Training advanced stuff. Get better everyday. It's a long leaning curve that you haveto climb. Be patient with yourself and others. That's how you get there.
Also, welcome ^^

Welcome to the forums ShAd3!

This guide contains a lot of general information about competitive play that you can use to your advantage. Just take baby steps and you'll notice growth gradually.

My man @ TOGOpuff TOGOpuff also dropped some good information on how to train, so take those words to heart.

Enjoy your stay here :)

Hi ShAd3. Like you, I'm new here (Started last week). Anyway, welcome to the forums. About you getting better, it would probably be better if you heed the advice of your fellow Smash brethren. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and that's ok. I got to explore the forums a bit more and I learned a lot of things from them. Other than that, enjoy yourself. :)
