I just played a guy online who would only use Palutena, Zelda, and Link, he would pretty much exclusively use only the movement stick, specials, grab, and roll. Tilts and smashes were basically non existent. I could not beat this guy to save my life. When he played as Link, all he did was throw bombs, twisters, and use arrows, and whenever i closed the gap i was instantly grabbed. He was such a ****ing piece of **** that at one point i decided to just ledge hang to see what he would do, to which he didnt even attempt to get close, but just spent a good 3 minutes trying to hit me with ranged moves.

I thought i was getting better until i played this guy. I literally just had the worst gaming experience of my life, i have never gotten so mad at a game in about 13 years of gaming (i almost never get mad PERIOD). I have absolutely 0 ****ing idea what to do, i tried about 10 different characters that i thought i was decent with on this guy and every single duel was the same story. Get ass****ed if im any distance away from him, get INSTANTLY grabbed when i close the gap.

Has anyone else dealt with this **** and has some advice?

Edit: There is another game i play called Chivalry: Medival Warrior on the PC. In that game i pretty much exclusively do 1v1 duels. I have played about 300 matches against my friend and have probably won only about 30, but i didnt even get angry because i could tell what i was doing wrong and improve every time i played. I have NO IDEA what im doing wrong in this game, it moves so fast and is such a twitch-raction fast paced game that i dont even know how to critique myself, i just get rekt and that's that.

work on varying your approaches. use projectiles or moves to fake them out a little first. don't just try to get in and intermediately attack. the game is about playing smart. not just technical. Practice predicting his moves. you will get the hang of it.

another suggestion. if you are new to smash in general. try playing against harder and harder CPUs for a little while until you get the hang of approaching

I'm new to competitive smash as well. Played SC3 competitively for a while as well as dabbling in some dota2 and CS:GO. I fully understand your frustration as I get utterly decimated in online right now. But as of tonight I can tell I have been getting much better.

I learned how to use my shield and dodge, effectively increasing my survivability. I lost a lot to players who grab then combo me like crazy so I learned how to time my grabs and pumble into combos.

Honestly for noobs like us, we can't worry too much about wins right now or our ratio. Especially since there is no ranking system to ease us into higher level play. Just got to treat each game as a learning experience. The more I play against a single player online the more I get used to their playstyle and eventually predict some of their moves. I play mostly Pikachu who seems to take longer to KO and get KOed easier so I feel your pain.

Easy fix. Your opponent seems like a wuss to me. You have a number of options:

  • Spam him back twice as hard. This is as simple as picking up a projectile heavy character. :4rob: is a really good choice, because he can outcamp even the campiest of Links. His Gyro is powerful, and has a number of uses like Link's bomb has. His Lazer can actually pass through projectiles as if they don't exist, so you can use that if your gyro gets snagged. Best of all, ROB has a (only somewhat useful) reflector with his Side B, allowing you to hit the projectile back at him, giving you enough time to wail on him with your side b. :4fox:, :4falco:, and :4villager: are also great characters to counter a spammy Link.

  • Adapt. "and whenever i closed the gap i was instantly grabbed." "INSTANTLY grabbed when i close the gap." Seems to me like you've already identified the problem. All you have to do now is avoid the grab. Your best option is "spotdodging, also known as "sidestepping" which I'm guessing you already know about, which is hitting down while shielding. Spotdodge his grab, punish him, which is easy, because let's be honest: It's f***ing LINK'S grab. It's like announcing to the world that you are Kira before actually confirming that the name you wrote was legit. (Death Note reference, couldn't help myself)

  • Just play better in general. This is mostly in response to your "it moves so fast and is such a twitch-reaction fast paced game that i don't even know how to critique myself" quote. I get that you've never done this before, but just keep practicing. There's literally enough knowledge and players around for you to become the next M2K, so just visit the site often, watch videos/streams of VGBootcamp, ClashTournaments, TourneyLocator, etc, and save your replays for further critiquing by both you and other players.

Hope all of this helped.

Oh I hate people like this. I usually use any character that has a counter to deal with them though.
Ike, Marth, Lucina, Shulk and I'm pretty sure Peach all have counters.
Then again, that isn't the best strategy for grabs.

Link, Zelda, and Palutena are most of my mains, so I can offer a bit of advice if you're being camped by them.
  • Do not run away when a Link starts spamming projectiles. Block to maintain your distance, then approach when you have the opportunity. While Link is pulling out a bomb, you can approach freely. When he's shooting an arrow, run straight at him and shield when it's charged to the point it will hit you, then you can jump to continue your approach. When the gale boomerang is thrown out, dodge the first hit, then try to use its return to aid your approach. If the Link tries to pull out a bomb as the boomerang is returning, you can do something like charge a running up-smash and have the boomerang pull you into range. As for the grab, Link's hookshot range is terribad--it doesn't reach as far as it looks. If you can bait out a hookshot (by stopping just out of range for example), they will be open to be punished how you see fit.
  • When Zelda is using Din's Fire, you can dash at them all you want then shield when the fireball is in range, then continue. You can jump over the phantom easily when close, and landing a solid aerial on it will put it out of commission for some time. Do not sit still with your shield active while the phantom is charging up. If the Zelda uses Farore's Wind within range of you, you MUST shield, unless you read their location really hard and can get a hitbox up. If they FW into your shield, you are free to punish. DO NOT attempt to use projectiles on Zelda when in range of Farore's Wind, as you will be blown away before you can act.
  • Palutena's main camping tool is Auto-Reticle. Once it has locked on, it fires three shots, meaning you can't spotdodge it, and the angle means you likely can't roll past it, forcing you to either shield or jump. If you are rolling, spot dodging, or air dodging when autoreticle is activated, it will not lock on and you can freely approach while Palutena is stuck in the animation.
Remember from the perspective of the camper, YOU are the one that is camping. If they are forcing you to approach, then you must approach (but if you are not yet in range, look for an opening. This shouldn't take more than a few seconds). Trying to wait it out until they get bored and come after you won't work in a competitive environment.
Again, I main these characters, so if you would like practice feel free to send me a friend request.

For someone like that I'd use projectiles to keep him back and mercy him with smashes when he runs in to throw

There are alot of players like this you gotta get in and close the distance it is annoying but it is how it is.
