How's this for a tournament format?

I find that when I watch a Smash tournament I keep seeing the same characters over and over again. I think it would be interesting to have a format similar to what Hearthstone does. In HS, players play best of five, where each player brings three decks. Once a deck is defeated, they can't use it anymore during that set. It would look like this:

Player one chooses Yoshi, Kirby, and Mario
Player two chooses Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Link.

Game one: Yoshi vs Luigi, Yoshi wins (Luigi is now out of play)
Game two: Yoshi vs Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong wins (Yoshi is now out of play)
Game three: Kirby vs Donkey Kong, Kirby wins (Donkey Kong is now out of play)
etc, etc

Of course, there would be no rule saying two players can't both use the same character, but I think it would bring more flavor and force players to be proficient with more characters!

Your thoughts? If this has already been done and/or brought up, please let me know and call me a dumb! ^_^

Glad to see you're in NC, hope you're in our Facebook group for Smash 4 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ncsmash4/).

In Smash 4, the character variance is pretty healthy right now, so I'm not sure what you mean other than maybe seeing alot of Diddys and other popular characters people currently think are good (Rosalina, Sheik, ZSS, Sonic, etc).

It's an interesting idea, especially because the game has so many (seemingly) viable characters. But the big issue people have with a system like this is simply that people want to play who they want to play, and there are a lot of people with a single best character/main they've put work into who don't want to be forced to play a second or third character. That alone is pretty much why a system like this won't happen, when people pay money to enter a tournament, they should be able to use whatever character(s) they want. This is a different case with Hearthstone where there are only 8 classes and then only a few viable archetypes within each (pre-GvG anyways, but I digress).

I'll only be in NC until the end of February, then I'm moving to WA (I'm in the Navy), but I joined the group anyways :D.

And yeah, I suppose that's a fair point.

As an aside, this idea should have been an optional thing to do in a Special Smash or some other mode. Smash Tour shows that it is technically possible, but nothing was really done with it. King of Fighters style team matches would be neat to experiment with, regardless.

For future reference, King of Fighters is probably a more relevant example than Hearthstone, due to it being a fighting game, and having done this team-based elimination setup for about 13 games now (in different variations, though 11 played more like MvC/CvS in that fighters could be tagged out at will).
