How would you introduce someone to your local scene?

Title.

I've been trying to introduce a fair amount of people into Sm4sh. I'm also trying to encourage recording matches, getting into online tournaments, and just making sure that we have fun in the meantime.

Also, do any of you guys have any suggestions towards introducing people into Sm4sh in general? I have a few friends who haven't touched Sm4sh at all but I have no idea how to go about introducing them.

Sometimes I want to be quite competitive/use a fair amount of terminology, but I'm afraid that I may scare them off at the same time.

Feel free to move/lock if I posted in the wrong section as well.

What I've been doing is to participate in as many events as I can, and invite people to do so, eventually someone else will be about as passionate as you are, or even more. Also, try not being too technical with terminology unless it's absolutely needed, or they ask for insight.
But the main thing is to play, play, play and keep playing. Even if not everything is serious 1v1, occasional FFAs, or even item matches can remind everyone why this game is funny.

Show them videos of gameplay that is enjoyable to watch or that caters to their character interests. If someone really likes Duck Hunt, show them some Brood or MVD. If someone likes Rosalina, even though a lot of people don't like his playstyle, pull up Dabuz because it's a Rosalina being very successful (don't forget to mention that he got second at our biggest tournament yet).

If you're in a custom-split community (idk how many of these there are, but my scene is personally split), then you should probably introduce them to custom banned first. Customs look very wonky on first glance (especially after seeing gameplay of customs being banned, which most videos are at this point). They also look very boring if you're watching characters like Villager or Rosalina (even more so than custom banned Villager/Rosalina). Work them into the custom scene later after they get used to custom banned. It's a way easier process this way in my opinion. Obviously this doesn't apply if your whole scene is custom legal or custom banned.

Outside of that, make sure they know where their character of interest is in viability, make sure they know what characters are considered really good, and make sure you give them some positive feedback after they play matches.

That's what I've done, and this is all my opinion of course. xD

Just encourage your friends to come out to events. I've got several of my close friend into the scene just by dragging them to tournaments/weeklies with me. Once they get a taste of the hype and the community, I think a lot of people have a good time.

I have a friend who absolutely loves the smash bros. games, but was not very good at Sm4sh. He wanted to get better so I wouldn't beat him every time we played. I took him out to his first tournament a few months ago, and he got absolutely bodied by some more experienced players. Now he comes over every day after work for some practice games, and he's getting MUCH better. It's amazing to see how players progress once that "fire" in them to get better has been set!

Our little local scene has grown from 5 or 6 people meeting up every week to practice, to running a decent sized weekly tournament, just from word of mouth. Tell your friends, tell them to tell their friends, etc.
