Say there's a Samus player that also uses Falco, but only against Sheik. They are up against a Sheik player that also has a Marth that they use against Falco. Let's call the Samus player Alpha and the Sheik player Beta.
It's a tournament set. On the character selection screen, Alpha picks Samus and Beta picks Shiek. Alpha sees that Beta picked Sheik, so Alpha switches to Falco. Beta sees that he switched to Falco, so Beta switches to Marth to counter. Alpha only uses Falco against Sheik, so upon seeing his opponent switch to Marth, Alpha switches back to Samus. Then Beta responds by switching to Sheik. Then Alpha responds by switching to Falco. Then beta switches to Marth, then Alpha switches to Samus. And it goes on, and on, and on. This is all happening on the character selection screen without a game even starting.
How would most tournaments decide who has to use each character? Would it just be that whatever character you put your icon on first, you have to stick with it? But then nobody would want to pick first and there would be standoffs.
