How to tell which system menu you have?

Long story short, I have a friend who wants to try out homebrew, but is convinced he'll brick his Wii if he does it himself. He wants me to do it for him, but can't remember the last time he updated. Since the last time I installed the HBC was November '08, I haven't really felt the need to keep track of the differences between the menus, as I was already set, and knew enough not to update.

I tried looking around the net for this info, but I wasn't able to find anything. I figured I'd fall back on you guys for some help.
