Hi, I'm looking to pick up melee and play at a competitive level. From what I know, it's much different from Smash 4, which I play. how do I start? What techs should I learn? What style should I play? I need answers.

Be prepared to invest about a year into Melee before you are comfortable with it's mechanics and meta on a competitive level.

Copy pasted form another post pointing to EXTREMELY similar (near identical) threads that address the same exact question already.

Also, going to Youtube and watching Kadano's videos or just searching "Melee tech" "Melee advanced" "Melee competitive" "Melee how to"

First, you should play around with the characters, learn which ones you like, and eventually narrow it down to a main while you're doing what is posted above.

You should probably start investing time in one of the top tiers to learn the mechanics of the game and its meta a little bit. but its not required

it's not that different from smash 4, most of the mechanics from any smash game will carry across, you just need to focus on the melee specifics.

1) Play the game with someone everyday or every other day. The other person doesn't need to be good but you both need to be trying to beat each other constantly and having fun. Do that until you find a character you enjoy and can beat the other person with. Also until you understand the way the game feels, until you understand the flow, all the characters basic move sets, ect. Play until you love the game, don't go through the next steps if you don't.
2) Search around your community and find people who have been playing the game for a long time and are better than you. Lose to them and ask them for advice. Learn neccesarily tech skill to keep up with them and then come back and do it gain and ask for advice. Then start reading about the game and watching in depth videos of tech and analyzing matches, second by second.
That's how I started and I'm doing pretty okay.
