I've been playing Zelda for upwards of 5 years now and now that I'm getting to a point where I feel like I can be #1 in my state, I'm slowly figuring out that Zelda isn't suited to be there. I started out playing her for fun, because she was a ton of fun, in brawl. This was after never really having a main in brawl (I mained Samus back in melee and she was terrible in brawl so I jumped around a lot). I got to be really good with Zelda and told myself that I'd give her a good reputation in tournament play. Now that I'm getting to the point where I feel like I can do really well, I'm finding out why she doesn't have a good reputation in tournament play. That said, my entire reputation is as the Zelda player lol. She really defined my playstyle but now she can't really handle the better characters in the game in the hands of talented players so I'm feeling like I have to make the switch. But after 5 years of only ever maining her, it's weird to say that I'd possibly main someone else.
After pulling out Samus at a local tournament in grandfinals after my Zelda was whooped 0-2, and winning with Samus, the pressure to switch has finally reached a tipping point. I guess the good part is, switching from my brawl main back to my melee main doesn't feel as weird but it's still pretty weird. I justify this more by saying that I learned a lot about the game while playing Zelda who relies so heavily on game knowledge in order to be played well. As a Zelda player, I needed incredibly good fundamentals and defensive knowledge in order to be successful with her and that knowledge carries over to other characters so I basically consider her my original teacher. Besides, I'll still be pulling her out when I can. I might still get a chance to stick with her if she gets some buff treatment like Ike just got.
