I've noticed it has become increasingly difficult to compete with a friend of mine in Smash 4. I didn't have a problem playing him before; in fact I usually won most of my matches. But recently he began rolling much more often than usual. Anything I attempt to approach with usually results in him rolling away to safety. Oftentimes I'm immediately punished afterwards with an attack or grab. He has worked a combination of rolling and shielding into his game play that I can't really handle. It seems he can either roll away or towards me for free and no efforts on my part can get a solid punish in. I end up desperately trying to chase him down the entire match and getting punished. The only thing counter to this strategy I've come up with is to engage him in this weird war of rolling. It prevents me from taking damage but inevitably doesn't progress the match any further and I usually end up losing my patience and trying a normal approach, which gets me punished.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't have a reliable way of punishing rolls. They always trick me up no matter how hard I try and prevent it. Even when I know someone is going to roll I feel like I can't do anything about it. How do people deal with it?
