I have been playing PM for about 3 weeks competitively now and have been to one local tourney. I spoke to a lot of players and one common issue is not being able to play with friends all the time. This is also my issue as well so now im wondering what is a good solo method or things i can do by myself to step up my game? I know that playing againts other ppl will ultimatlely step my game up, but hat can you do when you cant play with friends all the time?

Well if your computer can handle it, check out Netplay. I don't have access to a lot of people to play and Netplay allows you to play online without delay. Check out the guide in my siggy.

Other than that, work on your tech skill which you can do by yourself or just fight cpu's, just don't get too used to them because they certainly aren't people.

The best thing will still always be to find a partner. Check out the regional zones subforum and see if your area has any other people. A person to play against will always be the best way to learn. Join as many tournies as you can, those are even better. Especially if you lose. Best learning experience.

One thing you can do in project M that you couldn't do in Melee is practice your throw tech chases on CPUs. Certain characters and CPU levels will not mix up their techs, but many will.
