How to get better in Melee?

Hi, so, I've playing Melee for about a few months. I've got a lot of tech skills good with my mains Falco and Marth, I still need to get a few techs down like wavedash out of shine, wavedash OoS, and I need to get the timing down for Falco's wavedash. But, here's the thing....

I have become a literal computer fighting these Level 1s.

As EPsilon says, Strategy > Ability, yes that is true, but what's the point of that if you have no strategy? I don't have good reads nor can I watch my opponent's (like I have anyone to fight) movement good.

I really want to get better, but I just can't!

  • I can't go to tournaments regularly because I'm young (like, middle school young) and I can't go anywhere.
  • I can't play netplay because I use wifi and my internet is garbage when playing on netplay.
  • Only one person in my area plays Smash Bros., but they have never touched a GameCube in their life, let alone Melee.
  • Even though I play Sm4sh, As previously stated, I can't watch my opponent good.
Any thoughts? I really want to get better and stronger, but these limitations stop me.

Where do you live? if you play with people far away your almost guaranteed lag. And for sm4sh there are online tourneys, just check anthers ladder. As for watching your opponent, some aspects of this come with time, but mostly it requires that you think when you play, but don't overthink. There is a video from ssbm tutorials that sums up what I think you are looking for perfectly. Going back to netplay, there are a **** ton of varying reasons why it couldn't work, have you done significsnt testing with a vsriety of people to confirm its your internet?

I live in the MD/VA region. The first few matches of netplay I've gone on had a ton of lag. I'm gonna see if the lag is my location or if it's my internet.

Nice signature BTW.

MD/VA is very active. What city do you live in? We should play each other at a tournament sometime (if I don't look too sketchy right now)

I just came back from playing Netplay, I play someone in DC.

It lagged worse than For Glory. (jokes lol)

I live in Silver Spring. We should play together. Your funny moments do make me grin a little bit from here and there.

Can you tell me what the ping(ms) was? And was the pad buffer set properly?

I could remember what my ping was, but it went over 150 - 153. Pad buffer was set to 3 and 4.

Is it me or is my Wifi bad?

That pad buffer was way to low, but that is terrible ping. Sounds like it can be a wifi problem. Not much you can do about that

Yup, and that was with only me using the internet.

The browser started lagging.

You could keep playing Smash with your friend and gradually transition to Melee sometimes

The best way to play online with with a wired connection. If you can't do that and you live in a big house, you could try buying a wireless access point to extend the reach of your home's wi-fi signal to send and receive closer to your computer. Maybe you could also even elevate your laptop with something like Lego to create more surface area around the outside of your computer where the antennas are. I've only tested this trick in a college dorm basement that had a concrete floor, but it boosted my signal speed by 10 Mb/s. It might help give you a more stable connection or at least the placebo might feel nice

150 ping in a FG isn't TOO painful online, but it might be tolerable if it has good net code and doesn't have any button registration delay locally (SF4 and 3S on PS3 >_>). Timings for things in Smash are too dynamic, which makes them torturous if you add lag. Traditional FGs have an online relative luxury of suffering less here

Thank you EPsilon, this was really helpful. Also, I have my laptop elevated, and how did you know I had a laptop?

Anyways thanks for the recommendations.
