How to get a friend into smash?

I've been playing smash sense it first came out and started taking it seriously in about 2009 so I'm pretty decent at the game. I play it all the time and would love for some of my friends to actually try to get good in it, and its come into discussion before but every time it does it always ends the same way "Yeah but I wouldn't be able to play against anyone but or your brother (who is also decent) and you guys would kick my ass every time." and he is right, I have no idea how to combat this. When I taught my brother how to play he already had a decent knowledge of smash because he played it casually and would play smash 4 and stuff, but he put up with it and after about a month of just straight ass kicking he got good, but my friends don't have that patients. Also they don't have a gamecube they could practice against bots at their house with, only play at my house.

What should I do to be able to teach my friend how to play smash but without just straight kicking the **** out of him for a month?

Well, if they don't want to get into Smash, there's not much reason to try to force them into it. They wouldn't be having much fun then, would they?

However, if you have at least 2 dudes willing to learn, have them play each other as you watch. See if they prefer playing casually or competitively and go from there. If they prefer casual play, then whenever you play them just goof off and don't try to win. Personally that is hard for me to do though lol so I'd get it if you don't want to. If they like comp play, then let them figure it out, and walk them through different things. Once they have a drive to learn, improve, and win, start playing them. If they are passionate and have the ambition to continue, they will take the ass whooping and use it to learn.

Honestly you should also show them some highlight videos of amazing plays done by famous players in the smash community. I think that would also motivate them in a sense that gives them inspiration!

If you don't like a game because you lose at it, you just don't like the game. Tell them that. But it's okay if they don't like Melee. Don't force it on them

Don't teach them like they're in school. That's boring. If you're going to do anything involving Melee and you want them to play Melee, make it fun. Don't handicap yourself to make things fair. They're know that them not getting rekt will feel fake because it is

If you're going to talk to them online, show them combo videos

In groups of 3 or 4, have round robin rotations so that everyone plays against everyone equally. Don't do winner stays until they have the determination to handle losing for too many hours straight

Don't play to win too hard. Play to make the game as fun as you can. Approach more often than usual

I don't know about the rest of you, but after I saw the smash brothers docu, I was so pumped up to practice and join the scene.

Try that route, maybe you need a little help from the pros, aaaaaaaah see what I did there.

Show them the chillin rap + salty suite w/leffen

AND bizz vs eikelmann salty suite.

And introduce them to the one and only GRSMASH lol.

Famous matches like shiz vs m2k, genesis 1 GF's, and the like.

Gotta show them that it's hype.

You have to tie them down to a chair, and put on the 4 gods commentary from smash summit, then they get bored and start to unravel their ropes around the chairs and leave.

In all seriousness, just show them a few matches of the hypest **** you can find, then show them wombo combo. Then and only then, do you say 'Wanna play?'
