how to gentleman

Make sure you're practicing it on an opponent and not just throwing them out. I didn't know there was a difference when I first started, but I think at least one(?) of the hits needs to hit your opponent. I usually tap A as fast as I can 3 times and hold it on the last press. I'm not super consistent using this method, so I also buffer an input while the third jab is out (pressed almost immediately after I start holding the third jab), which helps me a lot.
