How to do land on the stage without lag?

Been having an incredible amount of trouble landing on the stage.

  • Shielding before landing has ending lag.
  • :GCA: + :GCD: is not an option because most people read it within seconds and shield and grab me. Same with down aerial attacks, not safe.
  • My characters air movement is not the greatest, infact it's one of the ****tiest. Doctor Mario, I'm calling you out, you and your terrible recovery. So I can't grab the stage edges without getting butt****ed. Unless I'm at the far left or far right, can't reach the edges when i'm getting thrown around in the middle of the stage.

Yelp, please help. This is terrible, getting grabbed is not fun.

Use a move that can Auto-Cancel... I think Doc's Nair can Auto-Cancel, so use that to hit the opponent if they are trying to approach you when you are landing on the stage... or you could just not use a move at all :p

What is auto cancel? I've been seeing that everywhere, i'm a complete noob at technical terms in smash bros.
Sorry.

Also, not using a move at all is not an option either, no regular smash bros player will not leave you alone when you've been launched from the stage.

You know L cancelling from Melee? Well in brawl, some aerial moves would do the L cancel by itself, which was basically dubbed "Auto cancelling" since the game was programmed to cancel the aerial lag of the move.

Other than that, I don't know since I haven't played Doc in ages :p

L Cancelling is increasing the speed of the frames so the attack executes faster right? Well, there's lag when you do the aerial attack and instantly land on the stage, so I don't think that autocancels.

L cancelling in melee is where you could press L/R right before hitting the ground when doing an aerial and it would reduce the amount of lag by half. In brawl it was the same thing, but it would only Auto-cancel a few moves, unlike melee where you could do it for every aerial move.

Oh, then that doesn't work with the doctor. I don't think it does.

Just tested all of Docs aerials, his Up air, Bair and Nair all auto cancel.
Give me a minute to test that out, I'm just really new to this stuff so I'm going to get some things wrong.

Oh, so I guess when you do the Nair and land on the stage it automatically auto cancels? So I guess that's the fastest he can land on the stage. I guess it's something with me being so predictable.

If my understanding is correct, Auto-Cancelling only occurs if a certain time passes between the move ending and you landing and, like Melee L-Cancelling, will still give you lag. Ideally, what you want is an attack that cancels all lag if it lands before the hitbox comes out. I don't know what moves do that for Doc, if any, but many characters have such an ability and can throw the move out just before they touch down to cancel the landing lag of other moves.
If you could combine that with something that has good coverage (Breezy Sheet maybe?) then you could stop them grabbing or attacking you out of the air and still be free to move the second you land.

EDIT: I've been looking at the character specific boards and their advice for dealing with air juggling is to mix up your game with jumps and fast falls, then punish with Dair or Tornado as soon as they miss. It's not exactly the same situation but the advice could still be applicable. They also say not to use air dodges because of their crazy landing lag but you can use any move 3 frames after the dodge ends to swap it for the move's lag so, if you air dodge high enough, it shouldn't be a problem. Air dodging is incredible in this game because it has instantaneous start up and only 3 vulnerable frames of end lag (not the same as landing lag).
