How to Deal with Obsessive Grabbing

Before I say anything else, please know that I am very new to higher level smash. The answer to my question may be very obvious, but I seriously have no idea what to do about it.

As the title of the thread shows, I am wondering how to deal with obsessive grabbing. Now, I don't know if there is any real name for this, but I am talking about when someone constantly grabs you, throwing out no other attacks other than grabs, and you can't do anything about it.

In order for you to understand what I mean, let me tell you the match I encountered this in. I was in For Glory, 1v1. I'm a Mario main, and the person I had been up against for a while (beating me every time), was Lucina. For most of the match, I wasn't doing so hot. Then, he catches me in a grab and throws me up. He then waits for me to fall back down, grabs me again, and repeats until I'm KO'd. Every time I tried to land and roll away, attack, or jump, he would always find a way to grab me before I could gain proper control of the situation.

What I want to know is how I can prevent this in case it ever happens again. I'm sure there's a way, or else that's all competitive would be if there wasn't a solution.

Best way to deal with an excessive grabber is for your character to have attacks with good range and short starting lag. Mario's Bair falls under that category.

Occasionally (although this requires some luck), you could also go for a surprise Smash attack when your opponent attempts to rush and grab you.

Finally, you can predict the grab and dodge it in time to counter attack with your own grab or with a tilt (most of the time).

Hope this helps. :)

I actually main Lucina, and I just ragequit a series of matches with this guy who was using Pit/Dark Pit who was obsessively grabbing me. Partly my fault for doing so many punishable things, I guess, but damn if it isn't infuriating.

Then he went and footstool KO'd me.

So salty right now.

That helped a lot! Now I remember that the only time I was actually able to go against the grabs was when I used a bair. As for dodging it, I didn't really have the time to do that, because the second I landed he would grab me again.

I also suggest not being predictable where you are going to land. I always hold to one way until I am about to hit the ground then I hold in the opposite direction.

As others have suggested being less predictable as well as dodging helps. One thing I notice barely anyone does is sidestepping. This is extremely good against grabbing as well as dashing attacks, most people I see use rolling as their only method of dodging. Mix it up and you'll have more success.
