Hello you smash guys,
I found my old gamecube+melee after moving and tried it out a bit (TOTAL noob). I played against the CPU and some characters really get me riled up.

How do you approach characters like Marth with any character that isn't like Marth? I mean, when I get near them the front or above they always hit me before I can hit/grab them because of their huge range. And Marth can grab me across half the stage. Attacks out of running or jumping simply don't work, just some cheesy special attack stuff. But that isn't satisfying.

Hope you can help me to finally get these guys down so that I can put the GC away and be satisfied.

Approaching against CPUs is different than approaching against humans. CPUs can do things frame perfectly on reaction, especially level 9s

For playing against human Marths, let them swing and miss. Marth's attacks last for very short durations, lag a lot, and he leans forward during the lag. He begs to get hit every time he misses and it's very easy for him to miss, aside from having a sword which makes up for that. Stay neutral and out of range. Try and bait him into attacking. Don't retreat too much or else you'll bring yourself to the edge. Sometimes, just charge right into Marth when you think he wouldn't expect it. Committing to an attack is very risky for that character. He might stay neutral when you go in. Running up and shielding is also an easy bait to get hit to attack. Punish whatever he does with something you can do OOS

But if you only play against CPUs, you'll learn their patterns as you get experience against them

To be honest I wouldn't even consider this at all because trying to hit high level CPU's has no applications when playing actual people

EDIT:
But if all you want is to beat a CPU then you can either up b into them with Fox or Falco or just spam roll back into fsmash with just about any character

with human opponents, try to keep a hitbox out at all times and learn to l-cancel so when you **** up you don't get punished too hard
