How should you determine the best gaming characters?

I as talking to some one the other day and he made a good point. We all know that Zelda and Mario and DK and Fox and Sonic all had 8 or 16 bit games and every one knows them and there counter parts. Ex. Luigi Bowser Link Then there is games like halo with master chief and metal gear solid with snake and everyone knows them. So my question is how do we determine a gaming character legend because of some starting earlier than others.

I think a lot of factors are involved. Not just the character's age. Not just his/her weirdness.
I say you: even Billy Hopkins has some chances of becoming a legend.

A good character in my eyes is one who has an effective personality, but also succeeds in being infinitely more than what they are initially made out to be. Like Zelos. At first, he appears to be merely a comic relief character, simply there to make us laugh and flirt with every female in the game. But over time ,we find out he's a much deeper person than originally believed, and that he even is successful in
betraying the party and feeding Pronyma information about them from the very first meeting with them
.

Another sign of a cool character is success in their goals. Like Kefka. I consider him a great villain because he succeeded in a way few other villains ever have. But really, it's up to you. In the end, it's really just a question of who you like best.

Yes, that is indeed why Kefka is a great villain.

I believe that a good character has to effect you in some way. Also that character(if a good character) sets standards for other characters.

the only factor that determines the best character is whether you like him/her the best over all other characters
