ive been practicing with them for a while now and i think ive made some frogpress with using them for combos. (i suck at combos tho -_-) ive been putting a while into it, and i was wondering something. how much better will i be if i master fast falling? is it like shield where its a part of the game like fast falling but is pretty much necessary for playing good? or is it more like smooth landing/l calceling where its good to learn it and it makes you better but not as much as the shield is necessary? just wondering.

Frogpress? Are you using Greninja?

But, yeah, the Fast-falling technique is not necessary to use to play the game, but it does allow for more options in situations. To be less precise and more practical, Fast-falling is a technique that can open a lot more to your game in ways beyond just giving you the option to continue strings of attacks (or even outright combos) it can also benefit you in all forms of movement.
Being a master of Fast-falling isn't going to make you a master of the game, but it is one technique of many that will lead you to a greater level of expressing your competitive art (so, yeah, you'll kick more butt the better you get at this and all other techniques, but no one technique will get you "pro status").

Appling EVERYTHING to its POTENTIAL is kind of the competitive creed. Which is why we competitive players are such sticklers when casuals and scrubs come into the competitive arena and start telling us we need to ban and limit ourselves for no good reason X^)

Well, it will never hurt to learn Fast Falling. It's not the most important fundamental movement technique to learn (Personally, I'd give that to Short Hopping) but it will help.

It really just depends on the character and the type of aerials he/she has, let alone the auto-canceling window. For example, I short hop fast fall all the time as Captain Falcon to land approaching nairs, retreating back airs, and scooping Uairs, and when I fast fall it depends on the duration of the move and height of the character. Like, I always want to make sure I land the last hit of nair on a Kirby so I can get the viable knockback, but end fast fall just early enough so I can actually hit the short joker. I see you play Shulk, so using fast falling is an alright thing to do with Shulk depending on how quickly you need to transition to ground with his nair so you don't get punished, though most of the time you'll simply use it to do cross-overs over characters, to put yourself in a good position and not got shield-grabbed.

tl:dc: While it certainly depends on the character you're using, it doesn't hurt to mix it up either.

Like all other moves and techniques, there is a time and place for them. Notably, though, using an attack will now cancel your fastfall (or at least, did before 1.04, so I actually can't promise that still applies). Thus, fastfalling is useful for getting into a lower vertical position more quickly. This is desirable for followups, and in some cases for simply landing from your attacks. However, there are also bad times to use it, like when it's going to run you straight into that Falcon Punch, or when you're going to dive straight past the ledge and into the abyss (Note: You will not ledge-snap while holding Down). Experiment with it, you'll gradually learn when's best and when's worst to use it.

This is an absolutely essential technique. Particularly with floaty characters like say, Samus.

Not necessarily, characters like Pit shouldn't fast fall because of his odd auto cancel frames, otherwise he's going to get ugly landing lag from his aerials.
