You don't have to predict the character's names exactly, just how many per franchise. (Characters like Samus/Zero Samus and Zelda/Sheik count as one).

Mario: 5 (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, plus one new)
Zelda: 4 (Link, Zelda/Sheik, Ganondorf, and a new character from the recent games)
DK: 3 (Donkey, Diddy, K. Roll)
Pokemon: 6 (Pokemon Trainer, Pikachu, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, plus a 3rd gen and a 4th gen)
Kirby: 3 (Kirby, Metaknight, Dedede)
Star Fox: 3 (Fox, Falco, Krystal)
F-Zero: 1 (Capt. Falcon)
Metroid: 1 (Samus only. I stand by my prediction that Ridley is a boss)
Mother: 2 (Lucas and Ness)
WarioWare: 2 (Wario and Ashley)
Yoshi: 1 (Yoshi)
Fire Emblem: 2 (Ike and Marth)
Animal Crossing: 1 (Not familiar with this series but I bet there's one character)

To make those numbers more concrete, I'd predict 5 Zelda, 4 Pokèmon, 3 Fire Emblem, 3 DK, 1 Golden Sun, and 0 Animal Crossing, yielding 42 characters total. Thats a bit of an ideal for me, but I also feel its realistic.
