I find the tier list the most interesting thing about the SSB series (I just hope sakurai doesn't constant buff/nerf in update's)

Tier Lists can take months, never mind the fact that most pros will probably want to try the Wii U version first.

I'm sure every player will have a list they follow in their own head after a few days/weeks, but I imagine other groups will wait a while for more testing before they publish their own "official" tier lists.

I bet the tier list will take a while... most likely people will be diving in to the characters they like. It could end up that a bunch of people take their favorite character to a tourney, and that character appears to be good because lots are using it in tourneys.

It'll probably take some time before even a preliminary tier list is made by Back Room folks. I dunno if they're gonna do it with the 3DS version or wait for the Wii U version. I'm curious myself to see how the tier list turns out.

Everyone knows that Luigi is gonna be SSS Tier though. :3

It will be at least 6 months after the USA release before the SBR will release where they think the current meta stands.

Is tier lists really that important?! The good characters will shine through soon enough.

Six months to a year after the international Wii U release, depending on how strong a push there is to develop an initial tier list. Brawl's first tier list came out about seven months after its international release.

Maybe. Look at how long it took Melee Puff and Brawl Olimar to ascend to their current positions on their respective lists. Look at how far Melee Mario or Brawl's G&W and R.O.B. fell between the first tier lists and now. In the months prior to the first Brawl tier list, opinions flunctuated wildly. We're in new territory, things may take a while to settle down.

Is there a general idea of who the top characters are though? I keep hearing that Duck Hunt is one of the best.

Yeah, give it like 6 months or so. From VGBootcamp's stream decent characters seem to be at this point:
Good:
Duck Hunt
Pacman
Robin
Mii Brawler

Maybe:
Pika
Lucina
Greninja

Makes you not want to take tier lists seriously huh? At least until several years down the road.

Not trying to be rude, but it'd be stupid on Sakurai's part. The whole reason why the two were made together is to save time on characters. Make them work differently between the two, and you eliminate the reason as to why the two happened in the first place.

However, there won't be a C-stick opition on the 3DS for a long time, and the stagelist varies. A few characters might be in different places, but that's about it.

Tier lists mean next to nothing until the metagame has had a chance to settle and people have had time to adjust to new characters, new mechanics, and any buffs/nerfs applied to veterans.

There's really no such thing as a "professional" tier list. There isn't some committee or anything. A tier list is simply an evolving representation of the metagame as it develops, consistently proven and disproven by tournament results, well established players' input and overall trends.

A tier list isn't a final report so much as a statement of where the game is at the point of the list's creation. An early tier list is next to meaningless. I need only point to Brawl's initial tier lists to prove this, as none of them had Metaknight at the top. Most had Snake. Clearly that didn't stick.

Besides, if you're curious how your favorite characters stack up in competitive play, I'd highly advise you look for matchup charts, rather than tier lists. Those are way more informative and helpful. Tier lists are too subjective and are ultimately made just for bragging rights.

Half a year to a year. Almost definitely. I don't follow tier lists, because I just play who feels right to me and who I enjoy playing, but I know that Brawl didn't have an actual tier list until waaaaay later.

I think we'll see stage viability much quicker than a tier list though. Some stages are easily not going be be in tournaments off the bat.

So it's best to not worry about them for now and just get excited for who you want instead of who is going to be good.

I think that last part is the point.

The controls are going to affect things for the 3DS vs. Wii U. Not because the characters themselves function differently.

Also, Sakurai doesn't make the tier lists. Fans do. So it would be the fans/SBR who are making the decision to have two tier lists or one.
