how in the world do i play with friends?

i have several ppl on my smash friends list…they are all currently online…yet there is no way for me to invite them to play when i go into "with friends" am i missing something? plz help me! im new to wii u

If it's anything like the 3DS version, they will have to join your game of their own accord. There is not, to my knowledge, an Invite option.

This isn't an Xbox. You don't "invite" people to your games.
You create a room and hope they willingly join it, unless you set up a game in advance through some third party.

You can message your friends, but I'm not sure if they will get the notification in-game or not. The messaging system works through Miiverse.

I usually set-up my friend games through 3rd party chat engines, or texting, etc.
