How Important Are Octagonal Gates?

Hey all,
In my quest to improve my Smash game, I’m probably overthinking my choice of controller. I’ve been playing almost exclusively with the pro controller, and while I love the overall ergonomics and feel of the pro, I keep wondering about switching back to the GC Controller because of the gates around the sticks. How important are these really? Or do I just need to focus on cleaning up my stick inputs on a controller I otherwise love? Thoughts and comments appreciated.

I never liked them personally, but I think they’re better for more accurate inputs. If precision is your thing, then stick with the Pro Controller.

Don’t particularly like it. The controller registers a diagonal flick as straight up or down while the left and right is just that. Don’t understand why they do that, but sure. I like the feel of the that Switch GC controller, but i could go for a circle over an octagon.

Unless you're playing Ryu (which you clearly don't), then you might want it for more consistent input commands, but it isn't necessary for any other character. Sure, you might misinput a little less, but it won't change enough about your play for it to be worth the money. Just stick with the Procon.

I have certainly noticed a difference. I played Melee and Brawl with a GC controller and I'm now playing Ultimate with a Pro controller. Without the octagonal gates I've found myself occasionally doing an up/down tilt or special in the wrong direction because when I did the directional input it was slightly tilted to the side instead of straight down, which never happened with a GC controller. In a few cases I've accidentally input an up special instead of the side special I intended, a pretty horrible mistake to make when you're playing K. Rool.

I like the Pro controller a lot. If it had octagonal gates it would be perfect for Smash. You can stick with the Pro controller, you just need to practice better input discipline so you don't mis-input.

I paid attention while I was playing today and found out that I actually use the straight diagonals a lot when using up airs and up specials. I think it's beneficial.
