The proliferation of Gift Cards into society will become so overwhelming that it replaces money.
Employees of all major corporations will be payed only in Gift Cards. Which will of course only be good at affiliated companies. People will be so used to Gift Cards by this point it will seem normal.
Since everyone who works for a major corporation will only be able to buy goods at other major corporations, small business will die. An odd sort of Consumerist Communism will emerge, where a small group of people at the top will ration out goods to the rest in the form of more-and-more specialized Gift Cards. These rations will be stratigically implimented in order to further the corporations own selfinterest. They will decide what gets made and who it goes to, effectively making them a governmental entity

Moral: Don't buy Gift Cards. Srsly.

To quote Dilbert's mother "Oh goodie, a gift certificate. Just like money only with limitations and an expiry date."

I work in a Grocery store (I know, it's lame), and we have an entire wall of Gift Cards. For Red Lobster and La Senza and iTunes and god knows what else.
And people are buying them. Thousands of dollars worth of them.
I just extrapolated on that a bit.

Who cares? It's their money. If they feel that a person in their life should get a gift from a certain store, more power to them. Gift cards hardly affect the economy as your first post implied because just about every store, even small ones, have them.

I don't expect this to happen. But, then again, I don't see why it couldn't.
The whole idea is a little absurd, and purposely so

The children! Won't someone think of the children!

Whenever I got/get Gift vouchers I trade them in with my mum so she uses them for food shopping and stuff and iI get cash to buy at places that don't sell things at top prices.

I hate it when people give me gift cards. It's so stupid and does not help me.

However, the stores are profiting a lot from these.

.....

One time I bought 10 $5 gift cards of target.

I gave them to random strangers walking on the street,

Also, if people give you gift cards to stores you don't like, put them on Ebay. You get extremely close to their total and sometimes over.
