How helpful is netplay?

I'm thinking about buying a computer for netplay, but with lag how helpful will it be? My internet is decent but not too good. Also is any monitor good or do I need a special one?

It will still be helpful. You'll learn the strategic aspects of the game if you're willing to tolerate lag. Use a wired connection to help reduce lag

CRT monitors would be the least laggy. Unless you use a gaming monitor, you're going to add some significant lag to your experience. Gaming monitors tend to lag between 9 ms - 16 ms, usually

As long as you use the Nintendo/Mayflash Wii U adapter, it will be very good. That's the most important thing. Lag from monitors tends to be only about 1 frame at most but you can use a CRT monitor.

Also, what do you have in mind for the pc you want? I'd like to help you get the best one possible.

I actually already talked to you on the netplay thread and you showed me this build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/pz6nhM. I'm actually thinking about getting this one. Also, what will I need to put it together?

Big thing for netplay is to keep your visuals basic. Pump up the graphics if you're going to play alone but if you play online revert everything back to the natural resolution / textures. Other than that good luck!

The only thing you need is a screwdriver.

Graphics enhancements and custom textures have been tested to not add any input lag.

Not so much concerned with input lag as 1-2 frame jumps you sometimes get using the enhancement hacks. If you use a frame counter at the higher graphical settings you'll see this sometimes, even with a good computer. Actually, if you know what causes this I'd really like to know just for my own personal curiosity. I'm not sure myself other than just emulators being emulators, you can get the similar sorts of things running virtual machines sometimes.

Erm, on a decent graphics card you don't get these. There can be small microstutters if you're new to the emulator though as Dolphin has to compile a shader cache. The first time something loads, it microstutters as its generating the shader. After that, the shader is cached so it won't happen again. Basically the more you play the less it will happen.

If you have about 1.5 up then you should be able to use netplay without kinks.
And yes it is quite helpful if you can't play against other people.
