I was just wondering how I compare to everyone with typing speed. For the sake of uniformity, let's all use this test and see what we get:

http://www.typingtest.com/default.asp

Do "The Enchanted Typewriter" for 1 minute. Record your FIRST try. >_>

(NOTE: You CAN backspace, but ONLY if you have not finished the word. If you press space after the word, you're screwed and can't redo it. I would just forget about backspacing.)

Net Speed: 84 WPM
Accuracy: 98%
Gross Speed: 85 WPM

I think that's mildly fast, but we'll see what everyone else gets. ^.^ I also want to see if correct internet grammar is directly related to typing speed.

Wow, the fastest typer uses dvorak.

I might use that sometime...however, I'm currently in a keyboarding class. Would learning another typing system interfere with the one I know already? >_>

It takes a lot of time to get used to. It took me a month or two to get as good at Dvorak as I was at QWERTY, but I'm much better at Dvorak now. Surprisingly, it doesn't interfere with your previously learned keyboard layout skillz. You kind of completely switch between modes, without them interfering with each other.

Here's me (third try, Dvorak keyboard):

Net Speed: 0 WPM
Accuracy: 0%
Gross Speed: 102 WPM

I think I may have missed the first word or something...or the program was broken...but you can see by the gross speed that I am in reality a very quick typer. My other two times had net speeds of 94 and 97, each with 98% accuracy. I love how it still tries to sell you the program even when you do so well.

One handed (like fifth try):

Net Speed: 64 WPM
Accuracy: 100%
Gross Speed: 64 WPM

Yeah I'm good. This is with one hand, by having the caps lock key switch the keyboard from left to right (mirror-image style). This is how I usually type. It let's me keep my right hand on the mouse. It's very easy to get used to this--your brain makes it a simple step from typing the letter o, for example on a qwerty keyboard, with your right ring finger, to typing it with your left ring finger.

Can anyone beat my 94 WPM first time? I think I saw a 91...

oh, i'd like you to post a screenshot of your fastest time now i can't believe someone using dvorak would beat me how!
This is how, my young omfgomfg:

As you can see, I got to the second page. With one second left. I used a hotkey on my screen capture program to get this image.

Oh yeah! How did I do this, you ask? And would buying TypingMaster Pro actually help me?

I have a fairly didactic memory. I stared at the text I needed to type, then closed my eyes, and visualized typing it. Once I had thoroughly memorized the text and visualized typing it about 20 times (visualization is much faster than practicing for real--I can type 1000 WPM in my head) I did it for real. This screen capture is from my first attempt after the visualization.

So this is about my fifth time actually typing it out.

If anyone comes close to matching this, I'll just go and memorize the second page, and visualize typing it. I figure that if I spend 2-3 hours practicing this, I could get up to 190-200 WPM.

Heh, thanks.

I don't really know what to say besides what I already said. I think I naturally have excellent fine motor control, and the visualization method I described really helps. I use that method for playing my saxophone, too. I stare at the music for a minute, letting it sink in, then close my eyes and start pretending to move the keys. After several run-throughs at about quadruple the real speed, I can play it practically perfectly for real. But I'm also really good at site reading, so it might be more innate talent.

I don't practice my typing or anything.

Also, I'm going to go back and see if I can get 170+ WPM. Wish me luck.

EDIT: Oh crap, someone said they got 160 WPM! On the off chance that he isn't making it up, I really need to get in the 180s, which is extremely difficult to do. Wish me luck again.

There's nothing to gain from lying on the internet about something so trivial as this. Nor is typing 160wpm impossible. There's nothing to gain from telling the truth, either, but there's nothing to lose but my boredom. Nobody else provided proof but Jammer, why should I?
I can't provide proof because my keyboard has a broken key and a few sticky keys. I took the test a couple years ago and I still type the same rate if not faster(which I doubt).

Good luck on getting 180, that's crazy.

I got it!

This is about 95% of my ability. I think I would be able to get into the 190s WPM if I really really tried. By the way, this is about the 10th time I did this test, so I've gotten a fair amount of practice. I could never type this fast if I was just copying text I've never seen before--I get about 95 WPM in that case.

Also, you may be interested to know that 183 WPM is slightly slower than the speed at which the average college student reads.

Wow, I think my finger muscles are all spazzed out. They're really jittery...I've never had that happen before. And they kind of ache...no saxophone playing for today, I think. I'm done speed typing for today, too--maybe tomorrow I'll break 190 WPM. Maybe.

EDIT: Joshisrad, I didn't mean to sound like I didn't believe you in my last post. Sorry. I guess I was just really surprised you did so well. Kind of a defense mechanism, I guess.

**** dude, nice score.

I type 140-160 on a cold read. Memorizing what's in front of me doesn't get me above much, just ensures that I'll get closer to 160.

By the way, my post on the topic of not having proof was directed at omfgomfg, not you.

That's excellent. Did you do a speed reading course or something?

I don't want to say how fast I read, because it's just bragging.

That is way better than I could ever do. Also, it's vastly better than 99.99999999999999% (literally) of all typist who type for a living. I think you may be a little confused, mate; perhaps you remembered the wrong number from a while ago?

Also, how cool is it that Stephen Hawking (an astrophysicist who is paralyzed by Lou Gehrig's Disease) typed 15 WPM with a single switch before he lost motor control completely (now he uses an infrared scanner to pick up his eye movements).

That one chick types 200ish on a cold read I'm sure. I think there are plenty of people faster than me and slower than she that aren't heard of. It's just reading fast and typing as you read. Same for thinking.

Don't worry about bragging on the internet. Just say it.
