How Does One Get Started Playing Competitive Melee?

So I have gotten into competitive Smash 4 over the past couple months. I am a Silver on Smash Ladder, so I would consider myself an okay player. But I would really like to get into Melee. I grew up playing it starting just after it came out, so I know the game pretty well. However, I find myself overwhelmed by all the competitive techniques like wavedashing and L-cancelling. So if anyone could help me find a place to start I would be very appreciative!

Indeed. Spend lab time practicing techniques and tech skill. That's basically all there is to it. You'll get it eventually.

Practice the advanced techniques alone until you can do them without consciously thinking about them. Then try to do them against human players. It takes time and effort

Is there a certain character who would be good for learning or is it just personal preference?

Play the character that you enjoy the most. Starting out, you don't understand the intricacies of the game and I think best to choose the character that you'll be most motivated and happy to see improving since mostly all of them (except maybe the absolute bottom) can teach you basics sufficient for a beginner. Once you get a little deeper, you might want to re-evaluate your main.

Fox has a high technical demand. You could try starting off with him to improve your technical ability faster until you're fluent at doing the essential techniques. Once you think you can do them well in actual games, you can try out the rest of the top 8 and see who you like

Just grind out AT's and then start playing. Then read SmashBoards and think about improving and stuff and you'll get better in no time.

Spend time practising on your own to master the technique(s), then find a scene. That's really it.

I started playing only a few months ago and I can already feel myself getting better. It just takes a lot of practice and getting comfortable with your character. Choosing a main lets you improve much faster too. I switched to Falcon only like a month and a half ago, and feel myself getting better with him every time I play.
