How does diffusion help cycle minerals and oxygen in lakes??? (HELP)

I'm not sure how much detail you need, but the process by which this occurs is called "stratification". Generally, the top layer of water in a lake is warmed by the sun (warmer=less dense, so it stays on top). The top layer is also able to exchange gases (including oxygen) with the air. Eventually, when the season gets colder, the layer on top starts to cool and mixes with the cold bottom layer, allowing the diffusion and mixing of gases and minerals.
