How do you usually use up-throws in this game?

Not sure if this is necessarily the right place to put this, but it seemed like it fit well enough.

I find myself rarely using them at all in this game. I use the side throws depending on my position to put my opponent off-stage, and down throws usually start combos.

Up throws however don't have a particular standout feature to me that would make me want to use that throw over the other three in some cases. I can only think of getting your opponent in the air which may or may not benefit you. What's a good way to use them?

I usually use Captain Falcon, but I'd like to hear any reports on any character as I find the lack of up-throw application for me to be mostly universal.

Personally as Luigi I never use up-throws. At low percents I use down-throws as combo starters and at higher percents I use back-throws to gain stage control.

Most up throws are generally not as effective as down throws and side throws. Although some up-throws, like Marth's and Lucina's are actually pretty good since they kill easier than their down/side throws. Like Weegie stated, down-throws are usually used for combo starters as most tend to throw the opponent slightly upwards allowing for easy aerial follow-ups.

I find up-throws to be very situational. As a Toon Link main, I'll only ever use up-throw if there's a bomb coming down on us and I want to use my opponent as a shield. Another situation would be if you grab opponent on a high platform, say, Battle Field's.

It seems like you can't really just ask if all up throws are useless and group them all together like that. I'm sure for some characters their upthrow is the most damaging one.

Combo follow ups aren't an option for a lot of characters, throws tend not to have enough power to reliably kill, and the damage difference between different throws tend to be tiny so I usually end up just using whichever throws are the coolest. Link's, Charizard and Samus all have pretty cool up throws. 369

I use them to make space, and at very high percents, to kill (my friends are often easier to grab than to smash). Depends on the character. Of note, against Little Mac, an up-throw is a great way to render him near-useless for a long period of time.

I opt for up throws when their % is too high to easily follow-up with other throws. Then I just hope to juggle.

Zelda can follow up on fast fallers at early percents with Utilts.
And I think Uthrow is one of the best for Sonic since its the one for starting Uair follow ups.

Some characters benefit from opponents being above them (Falcon being one of them), but it is situational. You wouldn't use up throw on Falcon because you want to up air after and down throw gives you a near guaranteed one anyways.

Rosalina can up throw up tilt at low percent so there's one situation. If you want your opponent directly above you as most down throws also send opponents a little sideways, there would be your reason.

Once Mewtwo is released there will be up-throws from him left and right. (Irony intended)

Essentially what it boils down to is what character you're playing as. Some characters have very useful up-throws (Marth) and some (most) don't.

R.O.B.'s Up-throw is one of his best kill moves barring Up-smash, and the only other throw you're gonna use is his Down-throw at lower percentages. So there's that.

I don't use them as often as I probably should. I tend to prefer back or down throws.

Rosalina's Up Throw to Up-Tilt or Up-Air is like a bread and butter combo that can potentially allow you to KO people really early, especially if the rage effect is on her. In any case, you can at least juggle people this way and pile on some percent.

With Mega Man, Up Throw to Up-Air is also something I will tend to use. Even if it doesn't hit, it generally forces your opponent into a dodge animation and there is a ton you can do with that (such as sneaking in another cheeky Up-Air).

I don't use them as often as I probably should. I tend to prefer back or down throws.
Pac-Man's Up-Throw to Up-Air could definitely be useful as Pac-Man gets his downward momentum cancelled slightly every time he uses Up-Air, meaning it could be very combo-able at low percents.

It depends on the character. For example, I use Greninja ' s up throw a lot because it can combo to up tilt at 0% and up air at around 50% and acts as a great kill move later on.
