Smash 3DS How do you think the controls on the 3DS will feel?

A big worry of mine with this game is how it'll feel on a handheld device, especially after playing pretty much entirely with a Gamecube controller for so many years, something larger that can probably take a little bit more abuse on the analog stick than the circle pad can.

People who haven't played the game or even those who might have gotten their hands on it while it was at Best Buy for a little while, what do you think of playing a Smash Bros game on a 3DS where the buttons are smaller and the overall feel is different? No good, totally fine, or will we probably just get used to it?

Probably weird as crap initially.
After something like 8 years of playing melee with the gamecube controller, trying the wii-mote and then later with the nunchuck attachment for brawl...
I've never really got used to it, even with the classic controller it still feels weird.

A true samurai uses only their own sword!
I'll mourn the day I lose my gamecube controller... I hate to sound like some kind of gamecube controller fanboy, but for me, it has the perfect shape, feel and layout for smash bros games.

I've actually have played a lot of Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion, and I personally think that's as close as you can get to Smash 3DS. I personally think I'll be able to jump in pretty quickly.

I think its something i'll get used to.... I mean, I am going to play this ALL THE TIME since it's a portable smash.
My only worry is with analog stick, I hope I don't break it..

Having played a good deal at PAX I can say that it feels just fine. The only thing that was hard to get used to was the lack of C-stick.

They're taunts, but I'm assuming you can rebind them.
I've played the build, and I gotta say, wasn't a seamless transition. It'll take time, but I only got 5 minutes with it.

I tried fiddling around with my powered off OG 3DS and just mimicking control inputs for Smash. It feels fine. I'll probably wait until the Wii U version comes out before I seriously play online and stuff, though.

I seem to recall Ken saying it felt great on the 3DS. I'm expecting no issues, personally. The circlepad is odd, but then again, so was the N64 controller when I first used it, and so was the Gamecube controller. Nothing that a few thousand hours of killing everyone's favorite mascots won't get you acclimated to.

The controls are ok, but the circle pad does limit movement. Doing SH Uairs is a pain in the ass with the circle pad and lack of a c-stick.

You can get used to them, just don't expect to perform at 100%.

I'm really feeling it.

I'm optimistic- regardless how it controls, it's still Smash Bros! I played with the Wiimote& Nunchuck for six years and Brawl felt fine. I'm sure that the 3DS will be an easy transition.

I tried them out, and it plays great.

The circle pad works as you'd expect it to. I you're used to it, you won't have any trouble whatsoever doing smashes or tilts when you want to, or walking instead of dashing and whatnot.

My only issue is the button placements, but you'll probably be able to change those. Shield on R and Grab on L is completely backwards, and I'll have to change my attack/special/jump configuration to anything that doesn't use A, because the button's a little bit unresponsive in my system. That's not the game's fault, though, so it's good.

Really, if you own a 3DS you probably know what to expect already, especially if you've played Kid Icarus or Kirby Triple Deluxe (as long as you played it with the Circle Pad as opposed to the D-Pad.)

That's reassuring to know. KI:U was fantastic and I loved how it controlled.

My brother feels the same way about the LR buttons. He says that he's switching them instantly. I might too, since it is odd that grab would be on the left side when the Z button in the past has been on the right of the GCN remote (also, the down on the d-pad of the Wiimote + Nunchuck was on the right hand too). Odd choice, but hopefully it'll be easy to change.

I played it at one of the Best Buy events and honestly, it was a little weird for the first few seconds, but you quickly ease into it. Your brain just sort of clicks. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't beat the GCC or anything, but it's not as bad as people had worried at all.

From what I hear from people who got to try it out (lucky), the controls are supposedly pretty easy to get used to. My biggest concern is whether or not it supports the Circle Pad Pro, because if so I'd probably need to pick one up before release...

The fact that it's New 3DS compatible seems to suggest that the Circle Pad Pro will work with it, but I'm going to be safe and wait until the Japanese release before I jump to buy myself one.

It is the perfect controller, at least for my (kinda small) hands. It just fits so damn good.

Honestly, the only reason I had a problem with the controls is because I was transitioning from Gamecube to "Classic Controller" buttons.

ABXY are in different spots compared to the Gamecube controller, and I didn't use Classic on Brawl, so this was completely new to me since the Jump buttons were in front of the attack buttons instead of vice versa.

So it will only feel weird if other games feel weird or if you never played Brawl or SSB64 with Classic Controller like me.

However, post-demo, I decided to start playing Brawl with the Classic to get used to them. You can also, feasibly, customize the controls like in Brawl. In which case, you can make the buttons map to what you want them to do and what feels most comfortable. So yeah. Shouldn't really be that bad.

However, depending on how big or small your hands are, it may be weird depending on the model. The original 3DS could cause cramped hands, but if you have no problem normally, there should be no problem now.

I wanted this game(both versions)to be the Smash Bros since Melee to exile us away from the cookie-cutter Gamecube controller - now we get a Wii U - GC controller adapter and a new 3DS that has a similar stick-button setup like the SNES AND GC controller.

Why, Nintendo, why? I'm sorry, but I look at the GC controller as a crutch in competitive Smash. When mine broke during Brawl, I quickly transitioned to the Classic Controller and a few minutes of practice and friend matches later, I forgot I was using a new kind of controller - it worked.

I looked forward to the controller scheme reset, but Nintendo seems to really want to push the GC controller onto us with Smash 4 so close to release...And now, competitive players will have an advantage when the new 3DS comes to the west probably late next year.

I'm sure they'll be great. The 3DS has a nearly perfect control scheme for Smash. I just wonder if the C Stick on the new 3DS will work for smash attacks.

To be fair, it still requires spending more money.

For example, in order to play SSB on Wii U with the Gamecube controller, it will cost another $20. Or, if you buy the bundle, SSB will cost $100 instead of the $60 everyone else is spending, since you get ANOTHER controller.

And for 3DS, you have to buy a whole new system. And we won't even have access to it until next year WAY after we have SSB on 3DS already.

Also, it's entirely possible the Circle Pad Pro might work with SSB. We don't actually know yet, but I was under the impression it functions as the same thing, but built in. So people who already have that would presumably already have the "C stick" advantage, and this was something implemented ages ago.

And the reason Nintendo is pushing the Gamecube controller is because that's what everyone complained about. BAW, WE NEED WIRED CONTROLLERS WITH NO INPUT LAG.

Competitive players can whine all they want that the game may or may not still have core elements of Brawl, but Nintendo & Sakurai have gone various lengths in hopes that this game appeals to them in as many ways as possible. Including bringing back the Gamecube controller, as both a normal GCN controller AND as a Classic Controller.

Well, I own both of those and KIU is my favorite game of all time sooooo.... I think i'll be fine when smash comes out. One question though, what were the default buttons for attacks in the demos? I'm hoping x/y is normal and a/b is special.

The Circle Pad Pro is something I overlooked, thanks for bringing that up.

As an ex-melee tourneytard that now embraces the fun and random turn-outs when playing online(yes, I prefer items), I want the playing field to be fair. I think the C-stick on the GC controller and it's lower position for easy smash attacks is something to think of when comparing to the 3DS peripheral compared to the ordinary button input.

Now that I think about it, the additional stick and it's position might actually make it take as long as a normal input for a smash attack...Would anyone with that add-on give their opinion?

It was a lot easier to use than getting used to the wii u pro controller...

I played Brawl with the Classic Controller. I found the 3DS demo very natural and the Wii-U demo was awkward, lol.

Oddly enough, I have to agree with this.

I was expecting it to be the other way around, and I don't know if it is because I don't own a Pro Controller and barely used my Classic in the past, but when I played the demo I had absolutely no trouble adapting to the 3DS aside from jumping instead of attacking a few times (or vice versa).

When I played the Wii U demo, I was a mess in 2 of the 4 matches I did. Especially when it came to throwing things. I don't know what happened.

I'll never understand why people need a button to jump... Maybe I just don't use up tilts enough...
Jump button is a must to me, jumping when you intend to do an up tilt or up smash its a possibility.
There is a reason why you can disable jumping with the stick, sakurai is a genius.

I think they'll feel like crap tbh.

But I got major hand cramps just playing through Pokemon Y, which didn't have close to the amount of inputs Smash will have. The system is too small and doesn't fit comfortably in your hand, and the game will suffer for it.
