I'm new to smash and yesterday someone I faced off against did something that kind of caught my eye and that was rolling right after getting hit or down throw'd.I was playing Fox and he was playing DK this was in Melee, but I was wondering if this can be done in PM.Because it looked really helpful to get out of rough situations.

Do you mean Teching? If you hit l or r on the GC controller as you hit the ground after being hit, you can tech, which either lets you roll away or stand up, both extremely quickly.

as in he hit the ground and rolled immediately?

if so, that's called teching. hit a shield button right before you hit the ground (up to 20 frames before, to be exact. 1/3 a second) and you'll stand right back up (tech). hold a direction as you do that and you'll roll immediately (tech roll).

don't spam the shield button, either, though! there is a fail window if you hit the shield button outside of your tech window (i.e. you hit shield 30 frames before you land on the ground) that locks you from being able to tech again for 40 frames (almost an entire second).

You can also choose to stand straight up by not holding left or right as you hit the ground. Extremely important mechanic, I'd recommend starting to get good at it.
