How Do You Place in Tourneys?

How do you guys place in tournaments? And how big are they? I've entered 11 tourneys so far and have one every one B| but they have been small :c but some better players who have placed well in bigger tourneys have started coming and I beat them so I wanna start going to S@X bc they guy I beat (3-0) placed 9th there and I wanna expand my smashing!
