How do you make high quality videos?

My first video has horrible quality even though it was taken with a very high quality camera.

how do I get a good set up?
what cords do I need?
do i need a laptop?

Basically I want to know all there is to make a watchable video

The best way to record is with equipment hooked up to the av-out on your TV. There are several options with this (capture cord, video capture card + computer, etc).

As long as the thread is up, what is a good/simple program that will encode videos in h.264?

I have vob files on my computer that I ripped from a recorded dvd but Nero just isn't working out too well.
