I've been trying to practice combos at home, and I have no idea how to go about doing it.

Any suggestions or techniques you use?

Honestly I would just suggest going into some bot matches and practicing some easy tech skill, don't face real people when starting out trying new things since you will usually not want to use a lot of new combos and tech skill but rather go back to fundamentals. Just play around with combos and then when your comfortable take it into the real world. If you can get Melee netplay it helps a lot too. Also sorry with the previous comment being for Smash 4 got my sections mixed up.

When I first picked up the game right off the bat I attempted to learn every single combo I could from just playing bots and I would take my new found combos and see if they worked in For Glory, if they didnt end up working too well I would just end up going back to the drawing board and learning new combos against bots. Just don't be afraid of trying new things and For Glory is always a good way to test combo's you've learned since they will react way different then bots will.
I mean, I posted in the melee forum.....

I like to use level 1-3 cpus for their DI, and just combo them. Learn guaranteed setups with your character and start from there.

Practicing against cpus can help, just don't get too comfortable. Cpus will make the same choices and react completely differently as opposed to a real player. If at all possible, find someone to practice the game with, and play tourney-style sets. If not, just fight bots repeatedly and find some combos that work, and get good at those.

I believe it is difficult to get a good regiment on your own until you know what to look for. I remember trying to rationalize combos with Marth early on by saying no one will ever tech certain set-ups. Yeah, I was obviously wrong. Its only after having played enough I feel I can go into a CPU and get an idea of what is player possible and simply not possible at all.

Either way, the best combos I feel one can practice are the ones that do not rely upon tech situations. Or at the very least note that you have to look for a tech in this spot if you do. For example, if you Uthrow CF with Marth onto a platform you should react to the tech options. But, in open space in the air you can pretty much try to react to the DI on the CPU and make choices that are beneficial. Such as doing stuff that keeps your opponent in a bad spot and you with the power to keep up your advantage.

For this game?

I kinda just learn situations and go from there. Bread and butter stuff mostly where I don't need to worry about platforms and then situations where there are.

At first I practiced on Lv1 CPUs just to sort of get the feel and confidence going. Once I was good with that, I moved on to Lv7 CPUs since they DI differently, and are a little more difficult to start getting the momentum going.

NEVER practice combos on Lv9s though unless you just wanna practice when someone DIs in and up...

Also the Combo training portion in How To Train Your Falcon is extremely useful. While it does have some Falcon-specific stuff, this is the best vid I've ever found on how to train alone.
