Sorry if things like this have been posted before, but I'm trying to get a general idea of how people feel about Smash Wii U's online gameplay. Sometimes I manage to get games that are very solid, other times I'm putting up with consistent input delay, or blatantly lagging. Overall I do think it is better than Brawl's, which is saying a lot, but I personally don't think it is where it needs to be. I was happy to think that maybe future updates could fix things, but Sakarai seems to be calling it quits on updates after Mewtwo so I've heard. I've never quite understood why Nintendo doesn't offer a better online service. The fact that it's free isn't really a valid excuse considering the PS3 had free online play that did not lag.

The lag is few and far between, and when it is, I can tell when it's my opponent lagging because they're really good at playing in the lag. I'm satisfied with the online play - only thing I wish for is more stages in For Glory.

Edit: Reset my router. Had a pretty good effect.

The fact that there is a 1v1 mode is enough to keep me playing, the only gripe I have is that theres no region base matchmaking and not being able to see my opponents connection.

Overall, Smash 4's online experience is mostly worse than Brawl for numerous reasons, despite some great innovations. I will list the pros and cons of this version over Brawl:

Pros:

+ Spectator mode is greatly improved over Brawl, despite the frequent repeat matches which are great for accumulating gold.
+ Ability to report and ban taunt parties which plagued Brawl
+ 1 vs. 1 stock matches With Anyone
+ Groups form much faster with far less time spent in waiting room

Cons:

- Ridiculous input lag (over 500 ms) With Anyone about a quarter of the time
- No ability to choose stages With Anyone
- No ability to remove items in For Fun
- No Battlefield or Smashville in For Glory
- No co-op modes online (I miss Multi-man Brawl, Home Run contest, etc.)
- No Regional matches With Anyone to limit latency (a la Kart 8)
- No ability to use Mii fighters With Anyone
- No ability to send replays to friends

I could go on and on, but the disappointments are numerous enough to say that Smash 4's online experience is mostly a downgrade from Brawl, which never suffered input lag, despite some terribly choppy matches it had. This happens even on an ancient traditional tube TV, so I blame the lack of forced regional matches. Quite frankly, the speed of light is too slow to fight internationally. The laws of physics simply make it infeasible. Give us an option to restrict matches to Regional, as we already can in Kart, and this greatly diminish input lag. Also give us back the online co-op modes that Brawl had. I miss those features greatly.

The only thing I'm interested in online is For Glory, mostly 1v1 but occasionally I'll play 2v2 (with a partner, no randoms). Regional matchmaking would be nice, however I don't have issues with 1 person lagging and the other person not, if I'm lagging, their lagging. My only REAL issue is the damn C stick and lag. Seriously, how do you do a neutral attack with something directional based? Makes me made mad beyond belief sometimes. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten punished because I did neutral A instead of down smash. If they could release a patch that would change the C stick to being assigned to the actual attack rather than (from what I can tell) being a short cut to "x direction" and A, I would be sooooooo happy.

Having absolutely everything enabled, including special flags, one-hit KO items, etc. is not everyone's idea of fun. Being able to remove at least some of the cheesier items wouldn't hurt. Brawl allowed this with random people, but Smash 4 only gives such options with friends online.

To further illustrate my point, I once played with just special flags on high frequency in a stock match with friends online. (No, I was not the one who chose that.) Let's just say we never finished the match (and I also wasn't the one who terminated the match either.)
