not totally sure what to call it, but there's that frustrating item that, if thrown at you, sticks to you and you fly straight up to your death.

Is it simply an instant-kill item? Is there no way to detach from it?

Thanks in advance.

If you mean the Beetle, you can reflect it back. I'm pretty sure you need to button mash to get out of it though. If you're under a platform that you can't go through and the Beetle gets you, it'll just keep going against the platform and give you more time.
If you mean the Boss Galaga, I think if you get hit enough or if you button mash enough you can get out, but it gives you more time. I think it goes through platforms unlike the Beetle.

I'm assuming you mean the Beetle? You can hit it to reflect it back at your opponent or (if I recall correctly) press a lot of buttons or circle around with the control stick to get yourself free.

I guess I do mean the beetle. But button mashing doesn't seem to work - I've never once been able to escape it. Is there a trick to it?

The consensus seems to be button-mashing really hard. I have managed to break out of the Beetle and even the Galaga a few times and that was my instinct. The result is harder to get than it sounds though.

Has anyone been able to snatch the Beetle right before it would catch them like you would an item or Peach's turnips?

Pretty sure button mashing is the answer as others have said...

Which is bad news for me.

Seems like that is one of those things you can either do or can't... practicing will help a bit but few people have the potential to be great at it.

The strength of it's hold over you depends on your damage percentage. The higher your percent, the harder it is to break free. It's like being grabbed by an opponent, only the hold has more base strength. It tends to be impossible to break free after about 60-70% on a normal size stage with no obstructions on the way up.

That being said, your only hope is to mash A and wiggle the control stick, once you're caught.

When friends and I play it is an unspoken rule that "I don't like it!" isn't a good enough reason to ask something about a game be changed.

And one of the people I play with... well his button mashing is insanely fast and it looks like an electrical current passes through his arm at high speed while he does it... can't say turn it off just to remove a natural advantage he has.

Mash faster. Seriously.

Also worth noting, the higher your percentage, the more mashing it takes. Past about 70%, good luck.
