How do patches work?

I want to download some patches for games, but I don't fully understand how they work. I'll give you an example of what I mean.

That is a link to a list of patches for F.E.A.R. but I don't know which one I should download. If I were to download "F.E.A.R. US retail v1.08 full patch" would that include ALL the previous patches?

As long as it doesn't say something like "US Patch 1.07 --> 1.08" (which some do), you shouldn't have to have a certain previous version to download it..

If a patch says 'Full Patch' it usually means it'll take you to the latest version.
