How do installing Project M mods works?

I'm kinda new at this, with my only experience being changing music in Project M?
How do you install Project M mods that differ things other than music (texture hacks, putting in Brawl Toon Link over PM Toon Link, character models)?
Does Brawl Vault factor into this? Does Brawl Vault stuff work for Project M?
I'm really clueless on these things, and a rundown/walk-through would be GREATLY appreciated!
