Greetings!
If I were to host a tournament, with three prizes at the end, with at least ten people-ish, what rules would I go by, and how?
I originally started typing this thread with a good paragraph to start... Then I accidentally highlighted it, and deleted it all, and crtl + z did not fix it. :[
I'll miss that paragraph...

Well, I just got done hosting a 20 player tournament myself for this game. The rules are completely up to you. For that small size, you can do a lot of things. I typically host 8-12 man tournaments at my house, but the one I did was at a venue. I did 1v1, best of 3 matches, with the finals best of 5. Double elimination via a loser's bracket. Matches were 3 stock, 6 minutes and overtime is handled by who has the least amount of damage. We typically do first and second place prizes. You can create and manage a tournament bracket for your tournament at: www.challonge.com - it's what I use and pretty much everyone else. For maps, I only allowed omega (flat) stages, battlefield, and the two Animal Crossing levels.

But yeah, you can do pretty much anything. 3 stock seems to be the normal. Check around on Smash Boards for other rule sets. Different tournaments do different things. I don't think there's a set standard for this game yet like there is for Melee.

I hope this helps! Good luck and most importantly... HAVE FUN!!!

Common stock/time setups are 2/5 (same as For Glory), 2/6, 3/6, and 3/8. Stage selection tends to vary by what selection method you're using, but they most common "totally legal" stages are Town&City, Smashville, Battlefield, Final Destination, and Kongo Jungle 64. Some TOs let players go to any Omega form, others treat Omega forms as different counterpicks for the loser to choose from (for example, going to Omega Lylat because the edges are harder for Rosalina to aim directly at).

You can also determine stage by round in the tournament (has a different impact than regular stage practices, and can save time), for instance, Round 1 is always on Battlefield, round 2 is always on Smashville, and so on.

Depending on how much time you have and how well the people know each other, you can also do what SphericalCrusher mentioned and do top two for prizes, and then use a quick doubles tournament and give the winner your third planned prize.

There're a lot of ways to do it, it really just depends on your goals in the long run.

Thanks, guys, you're both very helpful! That challonge.com thing looks handy so I'll definitely use that! Are battles always 1v1? Also, I noticed you guys didn't mention Big Battlefield, is that one not tournament friendly? And customizations and Mii fighters, are they allowed?
One last question, say one person's choice in weapon is a Gamecube controller, and another person's choice is the Wiimote. Why on earth would someone choose the Wiimote?! Is that very important, and would that affect who they're matched up against? I think I should make the first battle in the tournament only against those with the same controller (assuming it's an even number), but from that point on, let it become irrelevant.

There's no official verdict on anything for this game yet really, so just go with whatever you think is best. Customs and Miis are a bit iffy though, so I'd advise maybe going without. Also, I'd say different controllers shouldn't make a difference in matchups, since someone who plays with a Wiimote would be as accustomed to the Wiimote as a Gamecube user would be with a Gamecube controller.

Also, R.I.P. paragraph :(

My pleasure! And no, it does not matter about the controller differences - it's all a personal preference. 1v1 is considered "singles tournament" but there's also 2v2 "Doubles" tournaments as well. You can do a Free For All one as well. It's all up to you. And like others have mentioned, Mii fighters, custom equipment, and custom moves are most commonly banned as are items in tournaments.

Oh really? I'm somewhat surprised that customizations and Miis are banned since they both have upsides and downsides, but I guess it makes sense since you could make customizations specifically designed against certain opponents and their customizations. I think you guys have prepared me enough to host a tournament, thanks! Time to take my Villager TO WAR!!
