I just bought a Japanese copy of melee. How do I tell if it's NTSC or PAL? And which one is used in competitive play?

NTSC is commonly used in competitive play and I believe is used in North America and Japan. European melee discs are most likely PAL. If you would like to check, the language settings for an NTSC disc only contain English and Japanese as options, while PAL has French and German options as well.
