More often than not I find myself stuck between characters I invest heavily into a character and go back to one I have played when playing for fun against friends. Therein lies the problem though I now want to play that character I have finally realized that I'm stuck in this loop of switching characters which hinders my progression as a player.

Is it just two characters or a lot of the cast members? Because I don't see anything wrong with dual-maining, since it helps cover matchups that just one character can't.

Dual maining is only really good once you're at higher level of play having a single main allows you to focus more time and effort into a character thus allowing for better performance you should only really dual main when you have one solid character

Then that'd mean having a secondary and not dual maining. But back to your question, something that I like to do is to alternate the times in which I improve the characters (but only restrict it for two characters). For example, develop character A for a few weeks while keeping character B steady, and then do viceversa for the next few weeks. I think if you want to stick with just 1 character, though, you may have to use it both for fun and for glory in your situation.

Part of it is discipline to stick to a main

Do you find all of your "mains" fun? I'd stick to the one I would have most fun with.

In Melee there is more character specific tech than your Smash 4, making it difficult to switch between/ learn multiple characters.

I suffered from the same problem with melee, I was so concerned with winning that I kept switching and trying to main everyone but this was actually cutting my growth in skill due to the lack of commitment to a character. I decided to main Roy because he's my boy and he's the character I have the most fun playing. I lose A LOT more now off of crap that shouldn't happen, but i'm more about having fun. More fun=less sodium

It shouldn't matter as much in friendlies, but it's a matter of discipline that will keep you rooted to one. Chances are, there's one you favor more than the rest.

I think the underlying question here is do you want to just have fun or become better?
If you just want to have fun, go and continue switching characters since you seem to enjoy that but live with the consequence of not improving as quickly as others.
If you want to become better primarily, have some discipline and stick with one main as it's more time-efficient.

Well i guess we'll break it down to personality. Sheik/Marth are pretty classy like characters. While falcos a badass. Which would you relate to more, also falco has more recovery options (imo, no hate, cmon bro chill)

Enjoyment is more important than getting good. If all 3 are (equally) fun, don't restrict yourself from them
