How do I make Marth fall to the ground when shined by Fox?

I was recently playing against a Marth player as Fox, and I am very familiar with the matchup. I'm very accustomed to waveshining into a grab, but against this guy I noticed that when I shined him he would hit the ground like what happens when a space animal gets shined. Funny thing is, this guy had no idea what he was doing to make this happen. He said that his control stick was a little off, so I speculated that the control stick might be registering some inputs that were causing some sort of weird DI that would cause him to hit the ground. I haven't tested it, and I'm not currently in a position to really test it myself. Does anybody know how this happens? It seems like a super useful defense against Fox.

The only possible cause I know of is that he was charging a smash attack by accident, as that increases the knockback he receives above 80 (knockdown threshold).

Edit: Or it might have been PAL Melee. That would be too simple though.

Is marth like standing and just landing as if he just empty hopped? If so , it sounds like he is inputting a jump and getting hit by the shine in midair and then inputting di away from fox.

He was never charging a smash attack when it happened, not was it like the scenario in the video above. Every time hit happened he was already grounded. I noticed it first one time when I I was applying shield pressure and landed a shine. It could have been PAL, which I will check for next time I play on that setup, but I think it's unlikely because there was a Falco player and he was still able to spike. (Never played on PAL, but someone tole me that there are no spikes in PAL?) I very much intend to investigate this further.

Was it a 20XX install? The only way that can happen is if he accidentally pressed R on the CSS to select PAL Marth.
