How do I hold the GC controller comfortably?

When I try to L-cancel my fingers slide off the triggers and it hurts, actually, this happens for pretty much every trigger

Highly subjective but the way I hold any controller is the same:

Just imagine me doing the same thing with the other side of the controller. Essentially I have my index finger ready to press the controller. Since it's already right by it there are never any issues of my fingers sliding off it. The con is that depending on the controller my hands end up hurting if I overuse the triggers, so I end up taking frequent breaks. I play for about an hour and then take a 30-60 minute break and then continue.

The way I hold the controller I usually end up hitting the bottom part of the trigger that sticks out a bit, rather than having my finger in the groove of the trigger. While this works fine on old controllers, it often causes the trigger to get stuck if I'm using one of the new smash controllers, which is incredibly annoying. Apparently if you swap the back of a new controller with the back of an old controller it fixes the issue, although I haven't tried this yet.

Middle fingers resting on the triggers.
Right index finger on Z.
Thumbs in typical positions.

Along with setting Z to jump, this has helped me improve substantially.

Well I have some experience on this matter and I'd be glad to help you. You see those two protrusions coming out of the bottom on the controller? Hold those when you feel like playing with the Nintendo GameCube controller. I feel it's best to have at least one finger on each pressure sensitive trigger on the top of the controller and your left and right thumps on the left joystick and face buttons on the right respectively.

If you're having issues with your fingers sliding off the triggers when you press the shield button, I have a few actual solutions for that as well. You can use Z to L cancel because it's basically a shield button anyways, you can put a shield button on a face button that you don't use, such as x or y, or you can change the buttons around to fit what you want it to. You can also just remove the springs from those triggers which is surprisingly easy to do as long as you have the necessary triwing screwdriver that you can get for 2 dollars off of amazon.
