I am really sad right now. My friend who doesn't even own the game gets more training than I do and woops me. What are some effective ways to get better?

Have your read David Sirlin's Playing to Win? If not, I very strongly suggest you do. It's extremely helpful for teaching you how to make the pro mindset your own.

You answered your own question. your friend beat you because of More Training. So... Train more. Feel out the characters, pick a main that suits you, look up their character discussion, learn the basics. Practice combos. After that learn some Advanced Techniques. When you're confident play For Glory ( Not always the best players, but you'll run into half decent players of nearly every character). The key to winning isn't only understanding your character, it's understanding your opponent.

That's a really broad question you're asking. I could write a small book on the topic if I felt like it, but for everyone's sake I won't.
1. Fight as many people as you can. Locally, online, it doesn't matter. Fight, fight, fight! Just as in any other sport, repetition is the #1 way to improve. Oh, and I highly recommend not fighting CPUs, they work nothing like humans and teach bad habits.
2. Dedicate yourself to a few characters. 1-3 characters should do. Make sure you enjoy playing them, though. Playing someone you enjoy will make you want to get better at using them! If you're having trouble finding some to use, try playing a 2 stock match as every character.
3. Watch some Youtube videos of various Smash 4 players to give you some ideas of what lies ahead. Once you know what your characters are capable of, see what the pros are doing with them, and use that to improve your game.
4.Get used to losing. It happens to us all. I compete in tourneys, yet only have a 63% winrate in For Glory.
5. Find some sparring buddies. Its always easier to train when you're not the only one.
6. When you think you're ready, try entering in some online tourneys. See what you can do! If you do well, consider going to some local tourneys so you can make a bit of cash!
That's all I got. If you dedicate yourself to this game, you will get better.

Practice makes perfect. Try practicing with real people (For Glory or with friends), instead of CPU's. Next, and this is obvious, don't play with items. They're a distraction.
Watch videos. There's some great tutorial videos on YouTube. Maybe even watch some Smash tournament videos. They're of course pros, but watch and try and mimic what they do.
You won't learn it over night, by any means. Just keep working at it.
