How do I fix melee Lag?

Decided to play start playing Melee since there's to much hate towards the newer iteration and I just want to avoid argument.

I'm familiar with melee and all the AT's, the only problem i'm having right now is the lag. Short hop nair, , fair or bair never come out till the end. Not sure if it's the controller, but I honestly doubt it.

Also I can't air dodge early, meaning wave dashing is extremely hard for me. Honestly, i think moves come out to slow, but whenever I watch videos on YouTube and twitch they always come out fast...

I'm looking to join Melee as well and i'm kind of new to playing it competitively.

Also any tips for L-Canceling? I got the hang of it but I find it difficult to do it consistently.

Well, I may not be able to tell you much about controllers, but for the TV there are some requirements.
In order to take out or minimize the lag that comes with competitive smash bros, a lot of people (myself included) end up buying a CRT Monitor from a thrift store like Goodwill or your local Salvation Army. It does not have to be very big. You can ask questions about specific TVs and stuff here

This is the best way to take out the lag, as most of the problems have been because of TVs.

Play on a CRT to play without lag

I use z for doing aerials and l cancels. Try that button. It might be easier

That shouldn't influence your desire to play. Just play the game you enjoy the most. Smash 4 is actually doing pretty well as of right now.

And yeah, it sounds like you're playing on a non-CRT, try that.

I really do like Melee, I decided I will play both, Melee is really enjoyable. Hard to get difficult to but I can at least try and get decent =D. I got Wave Dashing and Dash Dancing done, just need to get use to Consistent L-Canceling.
