I've been playing competitive melee for awhile and i realize that i am VERY inconsistent, and by inconsistent i mean one game i will play like a beast, and the next i cant even l-cancel or SD. Is the only way to become more consistent is by playing even more?

Playing more without purpose is not going to necessarily give you consistency. Its how you play more that matters.

While this is the simple answer to your question the execution is probably the hardest bit to explain. What are you having issues with?

Get your tech skill down so you can do it 90% of the time (AT LEAST) on command. Then get used to playing under pressure (where tech skill and focus may crack), play friendlies like they're serious matches (with stage striking and counterpicking) so you get used to playing sets as opposed to just numerous games.

A great way to get consistent in Melee is with the 20XX hack pack. Grind that **** for hours.

When i do play bad, i cant really do anything. i cant wavedash/l-cancel at all, my wavedashes will either just be me jumping and airdodging straight forward, or i usually will just airdodge straight into the ground. With l-canceling, ill cancel 1/5 moves i do. But when i do play normal/good, those things are a piece of cake for me. and i rarely drop combos.

Does your mind set change between games? What happens in the games you win? Does it flip back and forth every once in a while or does it flip once during a play session?

For me, mind set is huge. I may destroy someone one game and then end up auto-piloting a bunch of games. I often do much worse during random smash fests, but then I play at a tournament, and I beat people much more badly. I am focused at tournaments and everything just works out better.

A big thing for the days where my tech skill is off is I get this mentality that I have to focus on doing my tech skill. This leads me to playing more technical than usual and I flub stuff and get frustrated. It loops over and over and just makes the day a bad one. More recently I have not been doing this because I figured it out, and it has made everything much more enjoyable. Playing tired is still always not good for me, though.

Now that you mention it, In tournament after friendlies my mind set changes if i lose a bunch of friendlies before. When i win nothing changes that i notice. And it flips on more when im in the middle of the game. I also do have that mentality where i have to focus on doing my tech skill, and end doing the things you said. ill try not to think about tech skill that much during matches.
