How did matter come to being? On a related note, how did being come to matter?

I've been having a lot of religious debates recently and one of my main questions was on the existance of matter, I got this answer first:

"Matter is compressed energy."

Thinking this was the truth, I mentioned it in another debate and got this response:

"Energy is a form of matter, matter results from nuclear synthesis."

Please tell me which statement is correct, it's been really bothering me. Plz and thx.

energy is not matter. matter must have mass. energy does not have mass.

nuclear synthesis does not create matter, it just rearranges it.

Antinegative is completely wrong. At least the first sentence is.

E = MC ^2

Energy and mass are proportional. They are equatable. When you have energy, you have mass, and when you have mass, you have energy.

Put simply:

Consider a situation with a table and two rubber balls on top of it. The balls are completely identical in every way. You push one of the balls and make it roll.

Which ball weighs more?

Normal Newtonian physics tells you that they each weigh the same, but this is incorrect. The moving ball weighs more. It has kinetic energy, which is equivalent to a small amount of mass, which makes the ball weigh more.

Where did all the matter in the universe come from? Try reading this.

Since AltF4 has cleared up this matter, I can reply to this topic with a joke, as follows:

"You see, when a mommy matter and a daddy matter love each other very much, something special happens..."

Fair enough. I did find it odd that you appeared to know what nuclear synthesis was... but said something rather erroneous above it. It didn't look like a copy-paste from wikipedia. :)
