Stay in his face. Punish him when he tries to pull out a banana. Also it's pretty hard to trip on bananas now, seeing as they only last like 15 seconds - and getting hit by one doesn't result in much hitstun at all. I've played more than a few games as Diddy, and it's really hard to capitalize when someone gets hit by your banana unless they're right in your face and you KNOW it will hit. They only thing I can usually punish with is a dash attack. FSmash is usually too risky with too much ending lag to try.

My list novel of things not to do against Diddy (Especially online):
  • Don't keep rolling around and spot dodging, it will get you easily flip grabbed. Learn to run or jump out of shield instead of rolling most of the time. Also, mix it up. Running towards a Diddy can easily make them panic.
  • Don't challenge him off-stage. The new recovery gives us a large variety of options and we're more than equipped to deal with offstage pressure thanks to Brawl. Remember, we can monkey flip in to you and jump off your head. This doesn't apply if it's a situation that you are confident you'll be safe in (He already SideB'd or one would put him in a bad position).
  • Don't stay away from Diddy. If you stay in Diddy's face and keep him in the air, you're likely to succeed against him. Banana is more of a spacing tool this time around and not as offensive. If we have a banana in hand, you can shield it and if it's the second throw of it, it'll disappear. If this happens, Diddy's typically will want to regain that banana and try to pull another one, so try shooting for that read with something that is also safe in case he comes in for the grab/attack. For instance; If Link Boomerangs immediately after making the banana disappear (either by attacking it or shielding it on a second throw), it opens up Diddy to commitment. If he monkey flips, he's going to have to kick to get through the boomerang which leaves him open to easy punish from any move that out-prioritizes it. If he goes to pull a banana, you have created a window for you to push forwards towards him and pressure him closer to the ledge. If you see him jumping away and likely pulling out a banana, chase after him and hit him/grab the banana at the same time if possible.
  • Don't throw his banana away or let it sit around. Learn how to use bananas and how to jump cancel toss in to attacks, the perfect on-shield-hit punish. Alternatively, use it for spacing. Diddy can't pick up bananas as easily as before due to the air-dodge lag, so they're very likely to avoid trying to pick it up with anything but dash attack or neutral jab (Dair may be an option due to autocancel, haven't tested it). Throwing it off stage means he is going to pull another banana and allows him to potentially regain control. Letting it sit around is also bad because Diddy's are trained to know when and where their bananas are and how long they have to live. Many Diddy's here can confirm that eventually you can throw a banana off screen and time its disappearance with another banana pull very closely. We are far more likely to know what you're about to get thrown in to than you are.
  • Don't challenge peanuts with your projectile spam or camping. They gimp even the best players occasionally and the Diddy is effectively shutting off a space while pushing you towards the edge. If you find yourself in the line of spam/fire of an incoming one, dodge or attack through it with the idea of moving through them. If Diddy spams them, he's going to have a lot of lag/buffer to deal with. If he has a banana, he'll likely throw it after you get through so be prepared.
  • Vector (This games DI if you aren't familiar) his throws upwards and away. Diddy has mad combo ability after his throws if you don't vector correctly.
  • If a banana hits your shield, it almost always will bounce straight up. Don't sit in shield longer than when it hit your shield, jump up and grab it or punish the likely incoming Diddy.
  • Don't be repetitive. Diddy's tend to look for reads based on the player more than the character due to how every character has a shield, which is a bananas enemy. If a Diddy shields after you shield, don't let go for a bit, he's likely baiting you and will try to time a throw based on your likelihood of unshielding right away. He has a banana in hand and not too many out of shield options, so you have plenty of time to react accordingly. Try to keep track of how you recover on to the stage and mix it up, or do what I do and play roulette in your head each time and force yourself to stick to the option you picked, regardless of how scary it might seem. People expect you to go the obvious safety route, not the most dangerous!
  • Don't give up hope. Diddy SD's more than you'd think. Yoshi's Island for instance can blow you up on the sides while going straight up and thus kill Diddy (provided he doesn't get Randall saved). One poor buffer or input error can cause a Diddy to die very early.
  • Don't expect this to be a short match where you're all offensive. You're going to have to wear many masks throughout a battle with Diddy. Defensive when necessary, offensive when you get in, bait when in the lead and gimp when it seems the safest. Gimping is very hard in this game especially online and without a c-stick, expect yourself to make them happen a lot more for the console iteration.
  • If you whiff an attack, don't just shield after. We know that song and dance. If you whiff an attack because we dashed the opposite way or just stood still, chances are we're going to attempt a flip grab because you will shield/roll afterwards. Try not to use slow attacks in pressure free situations without anything to read off of and it'll also benefit you.
  • Don't throw bananas at us unless we're likely to get hit by it. Diddy's love it when you do that, we know how to shield it and get it back or how to instant catch/toss it back at you. It's not an offensive tool for you because you can't keep generating them, use it as a spacing/baiting tool.
Every character can beat a Diddy, it just takes time and patience to learn the matchup and cement in your head how a Diddy typically thinks. There is a lot more to the matchup than just this, but I feel I've written enough of a cheatsheet for now. Can't give away all of our secrets!

Also! I just remembered an important one: Don't land next to us if we have the time to shield. You'll likely regret it.

Zero did a Diddy matchup guide here. Now the Diddy he was against didn't seem TOO hot, maybe it was lag, but a lot of what Zero says applies. If Diddy is recovering low and you have a good lingering hitbox, you can easily gimp him. Use Banana's against him, and learn to sidestep the side B ON REACTION if he's predictable.

We can snake around people now, though, so it's not that easy. Plus, if Diddy UpB's straight up underneath almost all BF-like stages, he'll ride the wall and get the edge. Honestly though, Diddy shouldn't be recovering as low as we used to in Brawl. Our UpB is much better for horizontal recovery options now.

I agree. Monkey flip alone gets me to the stage 99% of the time. There are so few moves that send at low angles, and with vectoring, you can always ensure you're able to recover.

Yup, a smashed SideB gets a lot of range. It feels buffed in distance from Brawl.
